Helen Gardner (1908-86) was a tutor and fellow at St Hilda's College, Oxford before becoming the first woman to be elected Merton professor of English language and literature in 1966. She produced important editions of John Donne's poetry and wrote two books about the poetry of T. S. Eliot, The Art of T. S. Eliot and The Composition of the Four Quartets; and edited The Faber Book of Religious Verse. A fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Literature, she was appointed CBE in 1962 and DBE in 1967 and twice won the Crawshay prize.
