This book provides a comprehensive first introduction to bilingualism and bilingual education. In a compact and straightforward style, bilingualism at individual, language minority group and national levels are discussed. Written as a foundational textbook for students and teachers, it provides a detailed and integrated map of bilingualism and bilingual education. This second edition is extensively revised and updated, with new research findings added, more study questions, more commentary, updated references and bibliography. Two new chapters on literacy in multicultural societies and biliteracy in the classroom have been added and the following new topics covered: History of Bilingual Education in the United States; Assessment of Bilingual Children; Special Education and Bilingual Children; Bilingualism and the Economy; Deaf People and Bilingualism; Bilingual Teaching Methodology; Two-way Bilingual Education/Dual Language Education; European Schools Movement.
Colin Baker holds a Personal Chair of the University of Wales and is currently Professor of Education at the University of Wales at Bangor and Director of Research Centre Wales. His current research includes: the effectiveness of bilingual education, the national assessment of minority language attainment and European initiatives on bilingual education. The first edition of this book (published in 1993) was a Prize Winner in the 1994 Standing Conference on Studies in Education Book Prize. A Reader to accompany this book entitled Policy and Practice in Bilingual Education, edited by Professor Ofelia Garcia (City College New York) and Colin Baker, was subsequently published in 1995 by Multilingual Matters. Colin Baker's other publications are Aspects of Bilingualism in Wales (1985), Key Issues in Bilingualism and Bilingual Education (1988), Attitudes and Language (1992), and A Parents' and Teachers' Guide to Bilingualism (1995).
