Philip Schaff (1819-1893), an American theologian and church historian, was born on January 1, 1819, in Chur, Switzerland. He received his education at the Stuttgart gymnasium as well as the universities of Tuebingen, Halle, and Berlin, where he was influenced by Baur, Tholuck, and Neander. In 1843, he was appointed Professor of Church History and Biblical Literature at Mercersburg's German Reformed Theological Seminary. His inaugural presentation on 'The Principle of Protestantism,' delivered in German in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1844, was published in German with an English translation by J.
