This is a revised version of this volume.

Purdue University's Douglas Comer is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science. He is a known specialist on computer networking and the TCP/IP protocols on a global scale. Since the late 1970s, he has been working on TCP/IP and the Internet. As a principal investigator on various early Internet research projects, Comer developed his reputation. He was a member of the Internet Activities Board (the group of researchers that built the Internet), as well as head of the CSNET technical committee and chairman of the DARPA Distributed Systems Architecture Board.

Comer has developed courses for a variety of audiences on computer networks, the Internet, TCP/IP protocols, and operating systems, including in-depth courses for engineers and less technical courses for others; he continues to teach at various industries and networking conferences throughout the world. In addition, Comer advises private industry on network and networking equipment design. Professor Comer is noted for his groundbreaking textbooks on computer networks, the Internet, operating systems, and architecture. His publications have been translated into sixteen languages and are widely used in academia and industry.

Internetworking With TCP/IP, a three-volume set, is frequently considered as an authoritative reference for Internet protocols. More importantly, fifteen of the top sixteen computer science departments in the United States have used Comer's texts. Ranking by U.S. News & World Report.
