The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler
THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELER A book club discuss the works of Jane Austen and experience their own affairs of the heart in this charming tribute to Austen that manages to capture her spirit (The Boston Globe). In California's central valley, five women and one man join to discuss Jane Austen's novels. Over the six months they get together, marriages are tested, affairs begin, unsuitable arrangements become suitable, and love happens. With her eye for the frailties of human behavior and her ear for the absurdities of social intercourse, Karen Joy Fowler has never been wittier nor her characters more appealing. The result is a delicious dissection of modern relationships. Dedicated Austenites will delight in unearthing the echoes of Austen that run through the novel, but most readers will simply enjoy the vision and voice that, despite two centuries of separation, unite two great writers of brilliant social comedy.
Karen Joy Fowler is the author of five novels, including Wit's End and The Jane Austen Book Club, which spent thirteen weeks on the New York Times bestsellers list, was a New York Times Notable Book, and was adapted as a major motion picture from Sony Pictures. Her novel Sister Noon was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction, and her short story collection Black Glass won the World Fantasy Award. She has co-edited three volumes of The James Tiptree Award Anthology and wrote the introduction to the recent Penguin edition of The Complete Novels of Jane Austen. Fowler and her husband, who have two grown children, live in Santa Cruz, California.
