Andrew Lang was one of the leading lights in the study of unexplained phenomena. In this collection of essays, he takes a look at the state of the study of early religion, ritual, magic, and myth. He begins by looking at science and superstition, and the dangers of allowing belief unsupported by fact to seep into science. He then discusses the origin or religion, and loan gods, or borrowed religion, a theory advanced by E.B. Tylor. Lang then moves on to look at William Frazer's theory of the origin of the divine character of Christ. In addition, Lang discusses other topics related to early religious beliefs, including taboos and walking through fire. ANDREW LANG was born in Selkirk, Scotland, in 1844 and became an expert on a variety of topics. He translated The Odyssey and The Iliad; wrote a number of histories of Scotland; explored mythology, religion, and folklore in his writings; and authored novels, poetry, literary criticisms, and children's books. He was one of the founders of the study of Psychical Research, the scientific investigation of unexplained phenomena.

Dr. Mary Alice Trent, a native of the USA, earned her PhD. in Rhetoric and Composition Studies, Linguistics, Early American, and British Literature from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1995 and is Professor of English at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK (USA). Along with poetry, story, and scholarly journal publications, her book credits include Ethics in the 21st Century America and Religion, Culture, Curriculum, and Diversity in 21st Century America (co-edited). Along with presenting and chairing sessions at over 38 regional, national and international conferences, she has traveled and written in eleven Western European countries. Co-Editors Dr. Trevor Grizzle is Professor of Graduate Theology at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK (USA). He is Founder and Pastor of Hope International Ministries, and he has presented papers and conducted mission trips across the United States and around the world. Dr. Andrew Lang is a Professor of Mathematics at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, OK (USA). Born in the UK he read mathematical physics at the University of Kent, Canterbury. He has lived in the US since 1992, receiving his PhD in mathematics from the University of Missouri in 1998. Dr. Elsa Rogers, a native of Trinidad, earned her PhD. in Rhetoric and Composition from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and is the Chair of Liberal Arts and Applied Psychology at Hodges University in Fort Myers, Florida (USA). She has written and presented papers at regional and national conferences in the areas of language and literature.
