Magical Math by Jennifer Georgia

Parents are looking for ways to nurture a love of mathematics in their children, but many don't know where to begin. Kids are often alternately bored and confused by the way early math is presented to them, which leads to a lasting distaste for the subject. Magical Math is a solution to both problems, showing parents how to engage children in mathematical thinking through stories, activities, and games. It also educates parents in the big picture of what an excellent early math education should look like, providing ideas for applying the principles in everyday life. This approach builds thinking skills and leads to an organic but solid sense of math as a useful and beautiful endeavor.

Georgia, Jennifer: - Jennifer Georgia has wanted to be a teacher from the time she was small, but in her teens she realized that she'd rather be a stay-at-home mom. So she became a Registered Nurse instead and worked part-time in adult critical care, but the desire to teach never left her. When her oldest was four she discovered homeschooling, and began teaching kindergarten with a this can't be too hard, let's see how it goes attitude, which grew into a that was fun, maybe we should try first grade response. Since this was the pre-internet mid-90's, finding resources and other homeschoolers was very difficult, and at first she clung to the traditional schooling model. Gradually, exposure to a wide variety of philosophies and methods allowed her to loosen her death-grip on her kids' education, and things went along more joyfully after that. It became clear over the years, through knowing hundreds of homeschool families, that the secret to producing really stellar kids is deeper than a curriculum or educational philosophy. Any of them can work, and a variety of them are needed for different personalities and different goals; from early college to no college, entrepreneurs to physics majors. The common denominator of homeschooling is that non-expert parents are doing a great job of raising happy, well-socialized and well-educated young people. The Georgias continued on their homeschool journey, and four of their children have now moved on to the world of college, jobs, marriage, and children. In the meantime along came another bunch of four cute little kids, one biological and three adopted. Jennifer now has the chance to be very intentional in how she homeschools, as the tiny lingering fear that perhaps her kids would be better off in school has been completely laid to rest by the happy lives of the first four. This second-time-around homeschooling is allowing her to observe the Six Secrets of Homeschoooling in action, and she's excited to share them with you.
