After graduation he worked at the Design Institute for the Ministry of Commerce in China for close to a decade. Afterwards, he travelled to Japan to complete his Masters and PhD at the University of Tokyo, earning a PhD in Engineering. After working for the architectural firm Okada & Associates in Tokyo for four years, he became a full-time teacher at Fukuoka University. Since then, Xiang has served as the university's dean as well as director of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
