Egon Friedell wurde am 21. Januar 1878 als Sohn des judischen Tuchfabrikanten Moriz Friedmann in Wien geboren und starb am 16. Marz 1938 ebendort. Nach Absolvierung seiner germanistischen und philosophischen Studien arbeitete er zuerst in seiner Heimatstadt als freier Schriftsteller, Kritiker und Schauspieler. Der Leiter Kabaretts Fledermaus betatigte sich auerdem als Kulturphilosoph, Journalist, Conferencier, Religionswissenschaftler, Dramatiker, Historiker, Ubersetzer und Philosoph. Eng befreundet war er mit Alfred Polgar (1873 - 1955) und Peter Altenberg. Mit der Machtubernahme der Nationalsozialisten 1933 in Deutschland und dem spatere Anschlu Osterreichs wurde seine Arbeit immer starker behindert. Verfolgt durch die Nazis schied er am 16. Marz 1938 freiwillig aus dem Leben. Er wurde auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof begraben.
