Outline of Sufism by William Stoddart

Followed by many millions of Muslims throughout the world, Sufism is the heart of Islamic spirituality. However, not only is there still in the West a widespread ignorance of Islam and Sufism, there is also, thanks to the Islamic terrorists, a widespread hostility. This book offers a succinct, yet comprehensive overview of Sufism's fundamental doctrines and spiritual practices. Stoddart highlights Sufism's intricate symbolism and explains the central role of the invocation of the Name of God in Sufi spiritual practice. An appendix includes central Koranic, Prophetic, and traditional Sufi sayings.
William Stoddart was born in Carstairs, Scotland in 1925, lived most of his life in London, England, and now lives in Windsor, Ontario. For many years Stoddart was assistant editor of the British journal Studies in Comparative Religion. Stoddart's works include Outline of Hinduism, Outline of Sufism: The Essentials of Islamic Spirituality, and What Does Islam Mean in Today's World? Religion, Politics, Spirituality. Joseph Fitzgerald is a professional editor. He studied Comparative Religion at Indiana University and has traveled extensively throughout the Far East. His edited works includes the award-winning An Illustrated Introduction to Taosim by Jean C. Cooper. He lives with his wife and children in Bloomington, Indiana.
