In 1975, Anne Willan, a culinary icon who, along with Julia Child, Jacque Pepin, and James Beard, launched the modern culinary industry, founded Ecole de Cuisine La Varenne in Paris and educated some of today's most notable chefs among them Steve Raichlen, Gale Gand, Virgina Willis, Martha Holmberg, and Alexis Guarnaschelli. James Beard award-winning author Anne Willan is one of the world's leading authorities on cooking and one of only a handful of people to have won the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the IACP (1999). She is the founder of the French cooking school La Varenne and is the director of the branches in Burgundy, France and at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, and in 2000 she was named Cooking Teacher of the Year by Bon Appetit magazine. Willan's food writing has appeared in countless publications such as the Washington Post, and she is the author of cookbooks including French Regional Cooking, Chateau Cuisine, the classic La Varenne Pratique, the 17-volume Look and Cook series, and most recently, The Good Cook.
