
Edwin Morgan was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in the year 1920. In 1940, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, interrupting his studies at Glasgow University, but he later returned and received a First Class Honours degree. He declined an Oxford scholarship and instead lectured at Glasgow University until 1980. He's written a number of poetry collections and translated works from a variety of languages. In 2000, he received the Queen's Gold Award for Poetry, and in 2001, he received the famous Weidenfeld Prize for Translation. In 1999, he was named the first Poet Laureate of Glasgow, and in 2004, he was named Scotland's National Poet.
