More than 2,000 years ago a poet called Antipater made a list of the most amazing structures known to the ancient Greeks - the Seven Wonders of the World. They were the technological marvels of their age - the largest, the richest, the most splendid and the most ambitious projects that the great civilizations of the eastern Mediterranean could produce. Only one of the original Seven Wonders - the great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza - still stands today, but all the others in various ways have left a lasting influence on the world. Everyone knows the name the "Seven Wonders", but what were they? Why and how were they built, and by whom? This book will answer those questions, and more. Diana Bentley also explains how people in modern times have uncovered evidence of the original Wonders, and describes some of the great structures of our own age that the Wonders have inspired.
Diana Bentley studied at Sydney University, the University of New South Wales and the University of London. She now combines her career as a journalist and writer with her lifelong interest in history.
