Marilyn Friend, Ph.D., has worked as a general education teacher, a special education teacher, a researcher, a professor, an administrator, a teacher educator, and a staff developer over the course of her career. She is Professor Emerita of Education in The University of North Carolina at Greensboro's Department of Specialized Education Services, as well as Past President of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the world's largest professional organization dedicated to enhancing the educational performance of children and youth with disabilities and/or gifts and talents. Dr. Friend has worked with school professionals across the country and around the world (more than 3000 presentations and projects in the US, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia) as they collaborate to educate their kids, aiding them in developing classroom partnerships through co-teaching, forming productive and efficient work teams, and fostering inclusive practices. She is the author or co-author of three widely used college textbooks on special education, as well as a range of co-teaching materials for teachers and administrators, over 50 papers on collaboration, inclusive practices, and co-teaching, and a popular video series on co-teaching and other inclusive practices. Her efforts were recently recognized when she received the Teacher Education Division/Pearson Excellence in Special Education Teacher Education Award in 2016.
