His days at Newcastle United were never easy since his appointment as a director coincided with the emergence of Sir John Hall and The Magpie Group whose ambitions were to democratise the club and hand the power to the supporters. As Kettering Town's chairman he had to contend with the high expectations of a highly partisan group of supporters that sometimes even the players found too intense.
