Teaching the Mature Rider by Martin Diggle
Learning to ride is often associated exclusively with youth, yet in recent years many more people of mature years have elected to explore the particular delights of man's long established partnership with the horse. Until now, no book has addressed the specific problems and benefits of teaching the rider whose physical powers may be in decline, but whose mental facilities are often greatly superior to those of a younger pupil. The author has been involved with adult novices in the Riding Club movement, and has drawn on his experiences in order to write this book. Chapters cover the motivation and ambitions of the pupil, communication, considerations of background, character and temperament, physical limitations including informity, progression and further education. The final chapter advises the mature enthusiast on the purchase of a suitable horse. In assisting the instructor to understand, encourage and appreciate the mature rider, this book should not only improve the results of instruction, but also enhance the enjoyment of all concerned.
Martin Diggle, having started riding as a young adult, was for many years involved with a Riding Club that actively encouraged membership from adult beginners. Whilst progressing to horse ownership and competing successfully in dressage, show jumping and eventing, he retained an interest in encouraging newcomers to the sport. His previous titles include Riding from Scratch, Riding a Dressage Test, Riding over Jumps, Teaching the Mature Rider, Teaching Basic Jumping and Basic Schooling Made Simple.
