C.F. Meyer wurde am 11. Oktober 1825 in Zurich geboren. Er entstammt einer Patrizierfamilie. Die Mutter beging Selbstmord. Meyer studierte Geschichte, Philologie und Malerei. Unter dem Eindruck des Krieges 1870/71 entschied er sich fur die deutsche Sprache zum Schreiben. Meyer kam wegen einer Geisteskrankheit 1852 und 1892 in eine Nervenheilanstalt. Er starb 1898 in Kilchberg. Der nebenJeremias GotthelfundGottfried Kellerbedeutendste Schweizer Erzahler und Lyriker des 19. Jahrhunderts schrieb auerordentlich plastische symbolhafte Lyrik und sehr einfuhlsame historische Romane und Novellen.
