When a student of Neva Boyd at Chicago's Hull House in the 1920s, Viola Spolin was introduced to the use of games, storytelling, folk dance, and dramatics as instruments for fostering creative expression. She began to build her nonverbal, nonpsychological method during her years as a teacher and administrator of creative dramatics there. Her work has been translated into Swedish, German, and Portuguese, among other languages. In 1994, she passed away.
