Holmes's wartime letters and diary entries have attracted students of war as well as biographers of Holmes as rare glimpses into the mind and heart of a soldier who withstood the great slaughter.Mark DeWolfe Howe was an American editor, author and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 1925 for his piece Barrett Wendell and His Letters. He was secretary to Mr. Justice Holmes from 1933 – 1943. He was Holmes's biographer and had access to the entirety of his correspondence and personal papers. He was additionally the associate editor of Youth's Companion from 1888 – 1893 and was the assistant editor of Atlantic Monthly from 1893 – 1985. His has seventeen publications including Shadows, American Bookmen, and Classic Shades. He also edited several books including The Memory of Lincoln and The Beacon Biographies.
