A Wasteland Of Strangers by Bill Pronzini
Pronzini sets his tale in the close knit community of Pomo - a Lynchesque American town of seemingly friendly neighbours who hide a seething mass of jealousy and violent anger. A town where simmering rage and resentment is about to boil over ...Into this explosive situation wanders hulking, brooding stranger John Faith. Instantly distrusted by most of Pomo's inhabitants, Faith is soon the number one suspect in the murder of local siren Storm Carey. With a host of memorable suspects, each given their own first person narration, Pronzini has produced an unputdownable and taut thriller, full of twists and surprises.
A Wasteland of Strangers is an extended mediation on the nature of self-righteous hatred and what it does to the perpetrator as well as the victimGripping stuff. * * Big Issue in the North * *
A great novel that's part detective story, part psychological thriller, it has the atmosphere and feel of classic James M. Cain / Jim Thompson noir. * * Time Out * *
From its quiet beginning, the book slowly develops into a tense struggle, just like one of those old Westerns, where one man faces up to the town's bullies. Splendid stuff. * * Sunday Telegraph * *
