Why Science? by James S Trefil
With conviction and clarity, a prize-winning scientist and bestselling author explains why every U.S. citizen needs to be scientifically literate. He describes exactly what these principles are, from recognizing that the surface of the earth is constantly in flux to grasping the basic concepts of physics and chemistry. Trefil not only explains these concepts but also shows why they are worth knowing.
Trefil surpasses almost all other scientists writing about science for the public- The New York Times ""James Trefil has an unmatched ability to go directly to the heart of the matter with humor, plain language, and telling examples. Want to be scientifically literate without pain? Read Trefil!"" - E. D. Hirsch, Jr., University Professor Emeritus of Education and Humanities, University of Virginia
James Trefil is the Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. He has made contributions to research in elementary particle physics, fluid mechanics, medical physics (including cancer research), and the earth sciences and has written extensively about science for the general audience. He has recently completed a term as General Councilor of the American Physical Society and was awarded the prestigious Gemant Prize of the American Institute of Physics for his efforts to present science to the general public.
Robert M. Hazen is the Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University and Staff Scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington Geophysical Laboratory.
