Arriving in Fort Keogh, Montana Territory in 1879, ten years before Montana would become a state, frontier photographer Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931) would capture the spirit of the American West like no other artist. Equally comfortable photographing Plains Indians and working cowboys, Huffman worked both in the studio and out on the open range, as he documented untamed Western landscapes and the last of the buffalo herds.
