Mikhail Baryshnikov was born in Latvia to Russian parents. He began studying ballet at the age of nine and became a member of the Kirov company in Leningrad in 1969. Five years later, he defected to the West and settled in New York City as a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre. He has collaborated with such American ballet legends as George Ballanchine, Twyla Tharp, and Mark Morris, with whom he co-founded the White Oak Dance Project in 1990. During his long and varied career, Baryshnikov has appeared in more than 100 different ballets, five films, and three Emmy award-winning television specials.
