Shadow of the Dove Summary

Shadow of the Dove by Barry Davies

This is an account of two people who were once bitter enemies and fought at opposite ends of the spectrum, and who now share a mutual understanding and a commitment to peace. It follows their lives, tracing the violent path each accepted, and looking at how they once believed that violence was justified. It examines the horrific incident when their paths first crossed and culminates eighteen years later when they chose to meet again and put their pasts to rest. Barry Davies was one of the SAS men involved in the rescue at Mogadishu airport in October 1977 of the Lufthansa flight LH181, which had been hijacked by Palestinian terrorists five days earlier. Souhaila Andraws was one of the four terrorists on the plane, and was shot by Barry during the liberation of the passengers and crew. Barry returned home to a hero's welcome and continued his service with the SAS. Souhalia was taken to a Somali hospital, nursed back to at least partial health, and then put in jail for a year where she was treated appallingly before being released and sent to Baghdad. Both of their lives have changed dramatically since the Mogadishu incident and the events that immediatly ensued. This text gives an insight into the minds and ideals of opposing forces who have now chosen to accept their differences and fight for peace.
