Summary

On his death in 1967, Ackerley left his diary to Francis King. This selection concentrates on Ackerley's relationship with what he would call "my women": his sister Nancy, his Aunt Bunny, and his Alsatian bitch; but it also contains accounts of literary friends such as Forster and Sassoon.

My Sister and Myself Summary

My Sister and Myself: Diaries by J. R. Ackerley

In 1967 Ackerley left his diaries to Francis King, whose selection for this first paperback edition, while covering his friendships with Forster and Sassoon, concentrates on Ackerley's extraordinary relationship with his sister Nancy, his ancient, twice-married Aunt Bunny, and his Alsatian bitch. It is a moving story in which he found himself inextricably bound to his clinging, sad, and sometimes mentally ill sister. In essence theirs was a love story - even if one of resentments and jealous demands on her side and of exasperation and guilt on his. J.R Ackerley wrote five books: "The Prisoners of War", "Hindoo Holiday", "My Dog Tulip", "We Think the World of You" and "My Father and Myself".
