Family Life In Britain Summary

Family Life In Britain: 1900 to 1950 by Janice Anderson

World War I, the Depression and World War II, these are just a few major events that have changed, and indeed challenged, family life in Britain dramatically. Take for instance a girl born in the early part of the 20th century, she had little chance of eluding the role that was considered her destiny - to marry young, stay at home to look after her husband and raise a family. What would have once threatened a family's respectability in the early 1900s, today seem almost commonplace, for example - abortion, contraception, the single parent family or even gay relationships. This book takes an in-depth look at how families coped, and with the aid of fascinating photographs we can take a nostalgic walk back in time.
