Mile by Mile London to Paris Summary

Mile by Mile London to Paris: The Entire Route by Historic Golden Arrow and Modern Eurostar by Reginald Piggott

The railway route from London to Paris has always been both historic and romantic. Until the sixties the overnight sleeper train from Waterloo or Victoria was called The Golden Arrow, and its route down through France took in the coastal city of Boulogne, then hugged the Somme, scene of the most terrible trench warfare of the First World War before passing through the horse racing centre of Chantilly. Now we take the Eurostar, a marvel of civil engineering with its high-speed lines down to Dover and then racing across France through Lille, and above all the sub-Channel crossing of the Tunnel. Aurum's new Mile by Mile volume applies the cartographic method of Mile by Mile on Britain's Railways to log every mile of both London-Paris routes in forensic detail: gradients, stations, the sights to be seen from the train, the history along the route, and how both railways were built. It is a fascinating guide as you whiz through the landscape on the train.

Mile by Mile London to Paris Reviews

A fascinating volume Railways Illustrated 'Mile by Mile' logs every mile of the London-Paris route in gradients, history, stations etc. Most importantly and uniquely, however, it covers time by providing two graphic and visual maps of the same reailway stretch on each spread, as represented by two different routes:the Golden Arrow and the Eurostar. This is ideal for vicarious time travel and allows the reader to see how each mile of the track and the area around it has evolved. Add to this revealing photos and drawings as well as the authors' knowledgeable commentarty, this compact hardback can be safely branded a small wonder in itself. Engineering & Technology A strangely fascintating book...I plan to take my copy next time I travel - though Eurostar is so speedy that I'll have to be quick to spot the sights! Destination France Ideal for vicarious time travel...this compact hardback can be safely branded a small wonder in itself E&T magazine 'this indispensable guide is the perfect companion as you speed through the landscape on the train' The Sunday Telegraph This is an indispensable armchair guide for anyone travelling to France by train France Magazine
