These studies of major scientists (Kepler, Bacon, Mersenne, and Newton) and of occultists (Dee, Fludd, and Cardano), complemented by analyses of contemporary official and unofficial studies at Cambridge and Oxford and discussions of the language of science, combine to suggest that hitherto the relationship has been too crudely stated as a movement 'from magic to science'. In fact, two separate mentalities can be traced, the occult and the scientific, each having different assumptions, goals, and methodologies. The contributors call into question many of the received ideas on this topic, showing that the issue has been wrongly defined and based on inadequate historical evidence. They outline new ways of approaching and understanding a situation in which two radically different and, to modern eyes, incompatible ways of describing reality persisted side-by-side until the demise of the occult in the late seventeenth century. Their work, accordingly, sets the whole issue in a new light.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49655686725905,"sku":"GOR012224630","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52147100451089,"sku":"NLS9780521338363","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52411830632721,"sku":"NGR9780521338363","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0521338360.jpg?v=1751072564"},{"product_id":"appropriating-shakespeare-book-brian-vickers-9780300054156","title":"Appropriating Shakespeare","description":"During the 1970s and 1980s new critical schools of Shakespeare scholarship emerged, each with its own ideology, each convinced that all other approaches are deficient. This book argues that in attempting to appropriate Shakespeare for their own purposes, these schools omit and misrepresent Shakespeare's text - and thus distort it. Brian Vickers describes the iconoclastic attitudes emerging in French criticism of the 1960s that continue to influence literary theory: that language cannot reliably represent reality; that literature cannot represent life; that since no definitive reading is possible, all interpretation is misinterpretation. Vickers shows that these positions have been refuted, and he brings together work in philosophy, linguistics, and literary theory to rehabilitate language and literature. He then surveys the main conflicting schools in Shakespearean and other current literary criticism - deconstructionism, feminism, new historicism, cultural materialism, and psychoanalytic, marxist and Christian interpretations - describing the theoretical basis of each school, both in its own words and in those of its critics. Evaluating the resulting interpretations of Shakespeare, he shows that each is biased and fragmentary in its own way. The epilogue considers two related issues: the attempt of current literary theory to present itself as a coherent system while at the same time wishing to evade accountability; and the way in which different critical schools \"demonize\" their rivals, thus adding an intolerant tone to much recent criticism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49730423718161,"sku":"GOR011035775","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51483705671953,"sku":"GOR010219874","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0300054157.jpg?v=1751037994"},{"product_id":"jesus-blood-and-righteousness-book-brian-vickers-9781581347548","title":"Jesus' Blood and Righteousness","description":"New Testament professor Brian Vickers shows that the doctrine of imputation isn't just a subject for academic debate; it strikes at the heart of what it means to be right with God.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":49795529441553,"sku":"CIN1581347545G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51038605148433,"sku":"NIN9781581347548","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ LIKE_NEW \/ SBYB","offer_id":51708631482641,"sku":"CIN1581347545LN","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52550642893073,"sku":"CIN1581347545VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":53373011394833,"sku":"CIN1581347545A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1581347545.jpg?v=1767355204"},{"product_id":"in-defence-of-rhetoric-book-brian-vickers-9780198117919","title":"In Defence of Rhetoric","description":"Setting out to reinstate rhetoric, this book opens with an overview of the rhetorical system as developed in classical times. Brian Vickers has brought together a wide-ranging selection of texts, some well-known (such as Sir Philip Sidney's Apology for Poetry, the most brilliant critical essay of the whole Renaissance, here given complete), some little-known (Dudley North's account of Metaphysical poetry), and one being printed for the first time (John Ford's elegy on John Fletcher).  In an extensive introduction the editor surveys the main sources and models for English criticism, which turn out to be the major classical texts fusing poetics and rhetoric: Cicero, Quintilian, Horace, Plutarch. Whereas modern literary theory conceives of an autonomous poetic (the poem existing as a verbal artefact, irrespective of its influence on the reader) in the Renaissance all critical theories were rhetorical, seeing literature as having a deliberate design on its readers, to arouse their feelings and to make them love virtue, hate vice. Writers commonly saw their task as being to 'inflame' readers with the desire to emulate goodness.  Renaissance literary criticism is also prescriptive, not descriptive: that is, it describes how literature should be written and what effects it should strive for. Accepting this orientation, the editor has included a substantial selection from the major hand-books on rhetoric and poetics, Thomas Wilson's The Arte of Rhetorique (1560) and George Puttenham's The Arte of English Poesie (1589). The emphasis throughout is on the links between literary criticism and literature itself. Most of the selections were produced by the practitioners themselves, poets and dramatists discussing their art: Gascoigne, Spenser, Campion, Daniel, Jonson, Shakespeare (in one of the scenes he contributed to Edward III), Chapman, Fletcher, Heywood, Massinger, Milton. The anthology also includes discussions of all the major literary genres: Senecan tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy, pastoral and allegory, Homeric translations, epic and romance, religious and lyric poetry.  All selections are annotated, identifying classical and other sources, and giving translations for Greek, Latin, and Italian texts. A section is devoted to Further Reading, and an extensive glossary is provided for archaic and technical words.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50345664151825,"sku":"CIN0199261369G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51000137515281,"sku":"NIN9780199261369","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52108966297873,"sku":"GOR008246785","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143713190161,"sku":"NLS9780199261369","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199261369.jpg?v=1751101455"},{"product_id":"classical-rhetoric-in-english-poetry-book-brian-vickers-9780809314966","title":"Classical Rhetoric in English Poetry","description":"Back in print after 17 years, this is a concise history of rhetoric as it relates to structure, genre, and style, with special reference to English literature and literary criticism from Ancient Greece to the end of the 18th century.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50368664305937,"sku":"CIN0809314967A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52109144490257,"sku":"GOR006557644","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52819508003089,"sku":"CIN0809314967G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0809314967.jpg?v=1752317250"},{"product_id":"in-defence-of-rhetoric-book-brian-vickers-9780198128373","title":"In Defence of Rhetoric","description":"This work sets out to reinstate rhetoric. It begins with an overview of the rhetorical system as developed in classical times, surveying major texts from Aristotle to Tacitus, describing their main emphases and commenting on their value. Plato's attacks on rhetoric are analyzed and the author aims to show that they are a biased travesty of Athenian politics and rhetoric. The controversy between philosophy and rhetoric is traced from the original defence of rhetoric (by Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian) to its triumph in the Renaissance and the subsequent revenge of philosophy. The Renaissance is considered a time which revived the original conception of eloquence as the natural gift of mankind. The author attempts to demonstrate that rhetoric became the major discipline in the creation and appreciation of literature and the other arts. He emphasizes the expressive function of rhetorical devices and shows how the links between style and persuasion were carried over into music and painting in the 16th and 17th centuries. Professor Vickers also looks at the modern novel in order to show that writers still value rhetoric as a vehicle for style and thought. He concludes by surveying the state of rhetoric at the present time, in the critical theories of Roman Jakobson, Paul de Man and others, where he feels it suffers a fragmentation and mis-application comparable to that of the Middle Ages.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50554725564689,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50554726285585,"sku":"GOR013995171","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0198128371.jpg?v=1751227728"},{"product_id":"shakespeare-co-author-book-brian-vickers-9780199256532","title":"Shakespeare, Co-Author","description":"No issue in Shakespeare studies is more important than determining what he wrote. For over two centuries scholars have discussed the evidence that Shakespeare worked with co-authors on several plays, and have used a variety of methods to differentiate their shares from his. In this wide-ranging study, Brian Vickers takes up and extends these discussions, presenting compelling evidence that Shakespeare wrote Titus Andronicus together with George Peele, Timon of Athens with Thomas Middleton, Pericles with George Wilkins, and Henry VIII and The Two Noble Kinsmen with John Fletcher.  In Part One Vickers reviews the standard processes of co-authorship as they can be reconstructed from documents connected with the Elizabethan stage, and shows that every major, and most minor dramatists in the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline theatres collaborated in getting plays written and staged. This is combined with a survey of the types of methodology used since the early nineteenth century to identify co-authorship, and a critical evaluation of some 'stylometric' techniques.  Part Two is devoted to detailed analyses of the five collaborative plays, discussing every significant case made for and against Shakespeare's co-authorship. Synthesising two centuries of discussion, Vickers reveals a solidly based scholarly tradition, building on and extending previous work, identifying the co-authors' contributions in increasing detail. The range and quantity of close verbal analysis brought together in Shakespeare, Co-Author present a compelling case to counter those 'conservators' of Shakespeare who maintain that he is the sole author of his plays.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50696987771153,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":50696991637777,"sku":"NGR9780199256532","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52127217418513,"sku":"NLS9780199256532","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199256535.jpg?v=1750694632"},{"product_id":"towards-greek-tragedy-book-brian-vickers-9780582504479","title":"Towards Greek Tragedy","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":50785883685137,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50785883914513,"sku":"GOR008965312","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0582504473.jpg?v=1750783088"},{"product_id":"justification-by-grace-through-faith-book-brian-vickers-9781596380509","title":"Justification by Grace Through Faith","description":"The doctrine of justification as an alien, imputed righteousness has been under attack for several years. Originally published in 1989, the collection represents the best of Brian Vickers’ work from the previous fifteen years, in a revised and expanded form.  The first part of the book focuses on the connection between a work’s structural or formal properties and our experience of it. A new study of the Sonnets shows how personal relationships are literally embodied in personal pronouns. An essay on Shakespeare’s hypocrites (Richard III, Iago, Macbeth) analyses the uncomfortable intimacy established between them and the audience by means of soliloquies and asides. Another traces the interplay between politics and the family in Coriolanus, two forms of pressure which combine to push the hero outside society.  In the second part Professor Vickers examines some key episodes in the history of Shakespeare criticism. One essay reviews the persistence of drastically altered adaptations of Shakespeare on the London stage from the 1690s to the 1830s, due to the conservatism of both theatre managers and audience. Another reconstructs the debate over Hamlet’s character in the last quarter of the eighteenth century, in which the Romantic image of a hero lacking control of his faculties emerged for the first time.  This is an important collection by an outstanding Shakespeare critic which will interest specialists and general readers alike.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51001657688337,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51001660768529,"sku":"NIN9780367682415","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52532329644305,"sku":"NLS9780367682415","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367682419.jpg?v=1751006051"},{"product_id":"william-shakespeare-book-brian-vickers-9780415487276","title":"William Shakespeare","description":"The Critical Heritage gathers together a large body of critical sources on major figures in literature. His chief sources are the The Advancement of Learning and the Essays. His purpose is to reinstate Bacon as one of the supreme masters of English prose in a period which made rich use of all the expressive resources of the medium. The study is both analytical and historical: it isolates the major features of Bacon's style, and sets them in the context of Renaissance theory and practice. The features include the overall structure of Bacon's works, his important concept of the aphorism, and his use of the traditional patterns of syntax. Dr Vickers makes a challenging reassessment of the accepted view of Bacon as a 'Senecan' or 'anti-Ciceronian' prose writer. Particular attention is paid to imagery, in which Bacon's powers as an imaginative writer are greatest. There are two general chapters, the first being the problem of analysing style, the last on reactions to Bacon's style since the seventeenth century. This book also provides the basis for a fresh assessment of Renaissance prose.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51003024113937,"sku":"NIN9780521114967","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52485632164113,"sku":"NLS9780521114967","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0521114969.jpg?v=1750846177"},{"product_id":"shakespeare-book-brian-vickers-9780710079909","title":"Shakespeare","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ WELL_READ \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51150758936849,"sku":"GOR008234907","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":53077045149969,"sku":"GOR004020514","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0710079907.jpg?v=1751009901"},{"product_id":"thomas-kyd-book-brian-vickers-9780691211602","title":"Thomas Kyd","description":"A groundbreaking new account of the author of The Spanish Tragedy that establishes him as a major Elizabethan dramatist  Thomas Kyd (1558–1594) was a highly regarded dramatist and the author of The Spanish Tragedy, the first revenge tragedy and the most influential Elizabethan play. In this first full study of his life and works, Brian Vickers discusses Kyd’s accepted canon as well as three additional plays Vickers has newly identified as having been written by Kyd—exciting discoveries that establish him as a major dramatist.  Thomas Dekker, a fellow Elizabethan dramatist, referred to “industrious Kyd,” which suggests a greater output than the three plays traditionally attributed to him—The Spanish Tragedy, Soliman and Perseda, and Cornelia. Kyd worked between 1585 and 1594, when the plague led to the anonymous publication of many plays because of the breakup of several London theatre companies. Researching this corpus, Vickers has identified Kyd’s authorship of three more plays: Arden of Faversham, the first domestic tragedy, King Leir and his three daughters, a tragicomedy that provided Shakespeare with his main source, and Fair Em, a love comedy. These attributions are based on two forms of evidence: unique similarities of plot between Kyd’s acknowledged and newly attributed plays and many unique phrases shared by all six plays as identified by modern software.  Discussing all the plays in detail and placing them in biographical and historical context, Thomas Kyd offers a major reassessment of an underappreciated Elizabethan playwright.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51215740731665,"sku":"NGR9780691211602","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ LIKE_NEW \/ SBYB","offer_id":52879967551761,"sku":"CIN0691211604LN","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0691211604.jpg?v=1751445135"},{"product_id":"collected-works-of-john-ford-book-brian-vickers-9780192865618","title":"The Collected Works of John Ford","description":"Volume IV of the Collected Works of John Ford is the first of two volumes in the series to contain his sole-authored plays. For over two centuries scholars have discussed the evidence that Shakespeare worked with co-authors on several plays, and have used a variety of methods to differentiate their contributions from his. In this wide-ranging study, Brian Vickers takes up and extends these discussions, presenting compelling evidence that Shakespeare wrote Titus Andronicus together with George Peele, Timon of Athens with Thomas Middleton, Pericles with George Wilkins, and Henry VIII and The Two Noble Kinsmen with John Fletcher.  In Part One Vickers reviews the standard processes of co-authorship as they can be reconstructed from documents connected with the Elizabethan stage, and shows that every major, and most minor dramatists in the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline theatres collaborated in getting plays written and staged. This is combined with a survey of the types of methodology used since the early nineteenth century to identify co-authorship, and a critical evaluation of some 'stylometric' techniques.  Part Two is devoted to detailed analyses of the five collaborative plays, discussing every significant case made for and against Shakespeare's co-authorship. Synthesizing two centuries of discussion, Vickers reveals a solidly based scholarly tradition, building on and extending previous work, identifying the co-authors' contributions in increasing detail. The range and quantity of close verbal analysis brought together in Shakespeare, Co-Author present a compelling case to counter those 'conservators' of Shakespeare who maintain that he is the sole author of his plays.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51466278961425,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51466279059729,"sku":"GOR009145216","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52131233923345,"sku":"NLS9780199269167","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0199269165.jpg?v=1750779733"},{"product_id":"mark-book-brian-vickers-9781683597889","title":"Mark","description":"A meditative, gospel-centered, practical, and prayerful study on Mark for individuals or small groups, including forty days of short, 15-minute guided Bible studies written by a respected scholar for everyday Christians.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51629151518993,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51629151715601,"sku":"NIN9781683597889","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51629151748369,"sku":"NGR9781683597889","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":53338798129425,"sku":"CIN1683597885VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1683597885.jpg?v=1777371063"},{"product_id":"world-of-jonathan-swift-book-brian-vickers-9780631113904","title":"World of Jonathan Swift","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51797564064017,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51797564227857,"sku":"GOR013044814","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780631113904.jpg?v=1752157794"},{"product_id":"english-science-bacon-to-newton-book-brian-vickers-9780521316835","title":"English Science: Bacon to Newton","description":"Seventeenth-century England witnessed an unprecedented flourishing of natural philosophy, inspired by Francis Bacon's call for a new science based on observation and experiment, to be carried out in collective research projects,whose findings would be communicated in clear language. It includes his sketch of a scientific research institute in the New Atlantis (1627), which inspired the founding of the Royal Society in 1662, as acknowledged by Thomas Sprat in its History, excerpted here. Bacon's plea for an appropriate language for science also affected the Royal Society, as Sprat records, and gave birth to a number of schemes for man-made artificial languages, represented here by John Wilkins's Essay Towards a Real Character and a Philosophical Language (1668). Many scholars have doubted its authenticity, but recent editions of the Sonnets have accepted it as Shakespeare's work. Now Vickers, in this text, the first full study of the poem, shows it to be un-Shakespearian both in its language and in its attitude to women. It is awkwardly constructed and uses archaic Spenserian diction, including many unusual words that never occur in Shakespeare. It frequently repeats stock phrases and rhymes, distorts normal word order far more often and more clumsily than Shakespeare did, while its attitude to female frailty is moralizing and misogynistic. By close analysis Vickers attributes the poem to John Davies of Hereford (1565-1618), a famous calligrapher and writing-master who was also a prolific poet. The Collected Critical Heritage set will be available as a set of 68 volumes and the series will also be available in mini sets selected by period (in slipcase boxes) and as individual volumes.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52534903374097,"sku":"NLS9780415487306","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780415487306.jpg?v=1760669751"},{"product_id":"artistry-of-shakespeare-s-prose-book-brian-vickers-9780415489102","title":"The Artistry of Shakespeare's Prose","description":"First published in 1968. This re-issues the revised edition of 1979.   The Artistry of Shakespeare's Prose is the first detailed study of the use of prose in the plays. It begins by defining the different dramatic and emotional functions which Shakespeare gave to prose and verse, and proceeds to analyse the recurrent stylistic devices used in his prose. The general and particular application of prose is then studied through all the plays, in roughly chronological order.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52535299637521,"sku":"NLS9780415489102","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780415489102.jpg?v=1760670914"},{"product_id":"shakespeare-a-lover-s-complaint-and-john-davies-of-hereford-book-brian-vickers-9780521859127","title":"Shakespeare, 'A Lover's Complaint', and John Davies of Hereford","description":"When Shakespeare's Sonnets were published in 1609 a poem called A Lover's Complaint was included by the publisher, Thomas Thorpe, who was notorious for several irregular publications. Many scholars have doubted its authenticity, but recent editions of the Sonnets have accepted it as Shakespeare's work. Now Vickers, in this text, the first full study of the poem, shows it to be un-Shakespearian both in its language and in its attitude to women. It is awkwardly constructed and uses archaic Spenserian diction, including many unusual words that never occur in Shakespeare. It frequently repeats stock phrases and rhymes, distorts normal word order far more often and more clumsily than Shakespeare did, while its attitude to female frailty is moralizing and misogynistic. By close analysis Vickers attributes the poem to John Davies of Hereford (1565-1618), a famous calligrapher and writing-master who was also a prolific poet. Vickers' book will re-define the Shakespeare canon.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52538220380433,"sku":"NLS9780521859127","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52735614943505,"sku":"NIN9780521859127","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780521859127.jpg?v=1760680966"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/fr-fr\/collections\/auteur-livres-de-brian-vickers.oembed?page=3","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
