Western practitioners of yoga and meditation who have embarked upon years-long spiritual quests and who have practiced under the guidance of a guru tell of profound and ongoing experiences of love, compassion and clarity: the peaks of spiritual fulfillment. However, after returning to the West, they reported difficulties and crises in different areas of their lives. Why did these practitioners, who had apparently touched the heights of fulfillment, still suffer from these crises? The author explores the psychological theory of yoga and its concrete yogic psychological methods such as 'cultivating of the opposite' (pratipaksa bhavana), transforming it to 'imagining the opposite', a practice aimed at healing negative habitual tendencies. These methods are extracted from an in-depth study of the Yoga of Patanjali and the Tibetan-Buddhist Ati-Yoga of Longchenpa - the Dzogchen. The works of Patanjali (3rd century) and Longchenpa, (14th century) provide a profound psychological framework for understanding the human psyche. These methods are effective but at times difficult to implement. However, as demonstrated through a case study Western psychology can effectively undo habitual tendencies in a manner which may complement yoga practice, enhancing the integration of one's spirituality and psychology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49737282322705,"sku":"NGR9781800500877","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51272927609105,"sku":"NIN9781800500877","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52507761410321,"sku":"NLS9781800500877","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1800500874.jpg?v=1750802107"},{"product_id":"psychology-of-the-yogas-book-gidi-ifergan-9781800500860","title":"The Psychology of the Yogas","description":"The Psychology of the Yogas explores the dissonance between the promises of the yogic quest and psychological states of crisis. However, the mind, which carries within it the sense-of-self as the agent or ego, is wrongly convinced that it is the source of primary awareness, the true Self. Moreover, similar to a dusty and murky mirror, the mind reflects reality in a distorted manner, as its reflections become misrepresented through habitual tendencies and mental processes. And it is such distortion which produces confusion and suffering. Yoga in action redirects attention to the mind itself and seeks to remove the psychological blemishes, just like polishing a mirror. At the culmination of this process, the mind is liberated from mental processes and the causes of affliction and abides in an empty yet clear state. This is how the clear discerning gaze of yoga can be realised, by distinguishing between the source of light, which represents the true Self, and the mirror itself, which represents the mind and sense of self. Such a gaze has the power to liberate one from the misconceptions and emotions that hinder cognitive clarity. This study explores the road map of yoga as reflected in the Yogasutra of Patanjali (third century CE) and the Samkhyakarika of Isvarakrsna (350-450 CE) which leads to the rise of this discerning insight, evading interpretations motivated by naivety on the one hand, and excessive suspicion on the other. Inspired by the psychology of yoga, the author offers a meditation focused on the sense of self and the cultivation of a discerning clear gaze.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51631640183057,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51631640346897,"sku":"NGR9781800504851","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51937991262481,"sku":"GOR014467888","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52618708484369,"sku":"NLS9781800504851","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1800504853.jpg?v=1750766649"},{"product_id":"discerning-clear-gaze-of-yoga-book-gidi-ifergan-9781800504844","title":"The Discerning Clear Gaze of Yoga","description":"Just as light reflects on a mirror, the source of awareness, the true Self, is projected onto the mind, reflecting the world of phenomena and enabling cognition.
