It comes at a time of renewed interest in the artists who worked in these late-nineteenth-century colonies. The artists were often linked through mutual friendships made during study at the Parisian ateliers and summers spent in the French art colonies of Grez-sur-Loing or Pont-Aven. Each of the British colonies was sited in a small community dependent on fishing or farming and far enough away from urban centres to retain much of their old customs and way of life. The authors trace the development of the colonies in the twentieth century, when styles and subjects changed, sometimes sparked by the decline of the fishing industry, the influx of middle-class tourists and the encroachment of industrialisation. Many of the paintings produced at the eight colonies were concerned with rendering a 'truthful' depiction of a particular time and place, and can now be seen as a celebration of various unique aspects of a British way of life that was fast disappearing.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49543723909393,"sku":"GOR004708537","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51118586855697,"sku":"GOR011910484","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1904537294.jpg?v=1750964421"},{"product_id":"william-king-of-the-road-book-laura-newton-9780006633686","title":"William, King of the Road","description":"In this book we meet William who enjoys playing with a bright blue car. Most of the painters were drawn from across the region, but Cullercoats also attracted a number of artists of national repute, including Frank Holl, William Quiller Orchardson and, most famously, the American artist Winslow Homer. His Cullercoats sojourn marked a watershed in Homer's watercolour style, but also arguably had a lasting influence on many of the other colonists. The Cullercoats colony must also be regarded as part of the international nineteenth-century artists' colony phenomenon since the themes and techniques found in Cullercoats paintings are shared by similar colonies at Newlyn and Staithes in England and at Skagen in Denmark, for example. Unlike their counterparts in Newlyn in particular, most Cullercoats artists were born locally and instead of collectively bombarding the Royal Academy exhibitions in London, they concentrated their efforts on stimulating and supplying a diverse patronage base in the North east through a number of art clubs and exhibition venues.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49761622163729,"sku":"GOR005720041","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ LIKE_NEW \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52806339559697,"sku":"GOR013122723","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1904537014.jpg?v=1751424822"},{"product_id":"william-the-vehicle-king-book-laura-newton-9780027682304","title":"William, the Vehicle King","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50342452691217,"sku":"CIN0027682307G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50400310231313,"sku":"CIN0027682307A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51836825403665,"sku":"CIN0027682307VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0027682307.jpg?v=1751069475"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/fr-fr\/collections\/auteur-livres-de-laura-newton.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
