Yet in a remarkably short time these drugs have come to occupy a position of prominence in medical practice throughout the world, and they now account for a major portion of all prescriptions. Most psychotropic drugs were discovered with little premeditation on the part of the inves~ tigator. The drugs simply \"worked,\" often with little rationale, and psychopharmacology has been for many years an empirical discipline in search of scientific underpinnings. In the past decade, a basic science of psychopharmacology has de veloped and grown rapidly. Though psychotropic drugs are exceedingly \"young\" as drugs in medical practice go, we probably know more about their various mechanisms of action than we know about most drugs in clinical use. Advances in understanding effects of psychopharmaceuticals on the brain have been so prodigious that a new research paradigm has evolved. Instead of being concerned solely with understanding how the drugs act, many researchers now employ psychotropic drugs as tools-often the most powerful ones-to elucidate brain function. Consequently, psychophar macology is central to neurobiology, which in turn has emerged as an important discipline, heir to the preeminent glamor of molecular biology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":49735203684625,"sku":"NGR9781468431674","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52670514692369,"sku":"NLS9781468431674","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1468431676.jpg?v=1751053607"},{"product_id":"introduction-to-neuropsychopharmacology-book-leslie-iversen-9780195380538","title":"Introduction to Neuropsychopharmacology","description":"Introduction to Neuropsychopharmacology expands on the molecular and cellular foundations of the classic Biochemical Basis of Neuropharmacology, Eighth Edition (Cooper, Bloom, and Roth) by now including the behavioral methods used to study psychoactive drugs in experimental animals and in humans. Authored by four founders of modern neuroscience, this concise and comprehensive text covers the current series of medications used to treat diseases of the brain and nervous system--both psychiatric and neurologic--as well as legal and illegal recreational drugs and the neuroscientific information that explains how these medications act on the brain from the molecular to the clinical level. The text ranges from drugs that affect the mood and behavior to hypnotics, narcotics, anticonvulsants, and analgesics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ WELL_READ \/ SBYB","offer_id":50345518203153,"sku":"CIN0195380533A","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50560191398161,"sku":"CIN0195380533VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":50999814947089,"sku":"NIN9780195380538","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51153791320337,"sku":"GOR009195426","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":52102940786961,"sku":"CIN0195380533G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52516061446417,"sku":"NLS9780195380538","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0195380533.jpg?v=1751005902"},{"product_id":"science-of-marijuana-book-leslie-iversen-9780190846848","title":"The Science of Marijuana","description":"The Science of Marijuana, 3rd Edition is directed at a public interested in knowing more about cannabis, how it works, and what the hazards associated with its use may be. In terms of cannabis as a medicine, it is now sanctioned by a majority of US States, with approved medical indications that often go beyond what is really known scientifically about the effectiveness of cannabis treatment.   Some countries and US States have approved full legalization of cannabis for adults; the regulations needed to control such legal use are still being worked out. The pros and cons of cannabis legalization are reviewed.  There have been big changes in the public perception of cannabis, and increased support for legalization. As in many other areas in science, progress in this field has depended to a considerable extent on the availability of new experimental methods, and Volume 15 reviews some major recent developments, including new autoradiographic techniques that allow direct visualization of drug and transmitter receptors in the nervous system, and the pin- pointing of the precise locations of the changes in brain metabolism elicited by various drug treatments. Volume 16 and 17 cover two of the most active areas for basic research in psychopharmacology at the moment: the characterization of drug and transmitter receptors in brain by radioligand binding techniques, and studies of the role of small peptides in brain function. The latter area, in particular, illustrates how rapidly progress continues to be made in basic research on the mechanisms of chemical communication within the nervous system. Eight years ago when the Handbook first appeared none of the opioid peptides (enkephalins and endorphins) had yet been identified. Since then a whole new area of basic biological research has focused on these substances, and in addition we know of more than thirty other neuropeptides with putative eNS trans- mitter functions.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52089131532561,"sku":"NLS9781468443639","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468443639.jpg?v=1756905886"},{"product_id":"handbook-of-psychopharmacology-book-leslie-iversen-9781468431919","title":"Handbook of Psychopharmacology","description":"Surveying these diverse contributions, one comes away with a sentiment that, far from being an applied science borrowing from fundamental brain chemistry and physiology, psychopharmacology has instead provided basic researchers with the tools and conceptual approaches which now are advancing neurobiology to a central role in modern biology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52128137937169,"sku":"NLS9781468431919","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52749901037841,"sku":"NIN9781468431919","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468431919.jpg?v=1757489614"},{"product_id":"handbook-of-psychopharmacology-book-leslie-iversen-9781461342168","title":"Handbook of Psychopharmacology","description":"The first six volumes of the Handbook reviewed basic neuropharmacology, drawing on expertise in biochemistry, pharmacology and electrophysiology. Neuroleptic is a term referring to drugs of several chemical classes-phenothiazines, thioxan- thenes, and butyrophenones-which have in common a selective ability to alleviate schizophrenic symptoms. Delay and Deniker derived the word neuroleptic from the Greek meaning to grasp the neuron.  They coined the name because they noted that therapeutic responses to chlorpromazine tended to accompany the onset of neurological, extrapyramidal side effects, which they therefore felt related to the essence of the drug's antischizo- phrenic actions. Subsequent research, particularly relating to neuroleptic effects on dopamine receptors, suggests that both therapeutic and neurologic untoward effects involve dopaminergic mechanisms, explaining their close though not invariant association. The chapter by Davis and Garver summa- rizes clinical facets of neuroleptics, analyzing their apparently specific clinical effects as well as reviewing practical features of drug use. Crane's chapter deals with tardive dyskinesia and other neurological side effects. Fielding and Lal discuss behavioral studies in animals which provide models for assessing the drugs' therapeutic efficacy. Janssen and Van Bever deal with the remarkable structure-activity relationships of the butyrophenones, the most potent and selective neuroleptics which were almost single-handedly devel- oped through the brilliant efforts of Paul Janssen. Shore and Giachetti describe basic and clinical features of reserpine, the neurotransmitter effects of which differ from .","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52143700640017,"sku":"NLS9781461340447","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52953458671889,"sku":"NIN9781461340447","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781461340447.jpg?v=1757585597"},{"product_id":"principles-of-receptor-research-book-leslie-iversen-9781468431704","title":"Principles of Receptor Research","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144471834897,"sku":"NLS9781468431704","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468431704.jpg?v=1757589093"},{"product_id":"amino-acid-neurotransmitters-book-leslie-iversen-9781468431766","title":"Amino Acid Neurotransmitters","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52151798956305,"sku":"NGR9781468431766","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52428490440977,"sku":"NLS9781468431766","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781468431766.jpg?v=1757614557"},{"product_id":"chemical-pathways-in-the-brain-book-leslie-iversen-9781468431858","title":"Chemical Pathways in the Brain","description":"The first six volumes of the Handbook reviewed basic neuropharmacology, drawing on expertise in biochemistry, pharmacology and electrophysiology. In Volume 7 methods for studying unconditioned and conditioned behavior were reviewed. Attention was given to both ethological methods and operant conditioning techniques as applied to some selected aspects of behavior. Genetic, developmental, and environmental factors influencing behavior were also discussed. In Volume 8, neurotransmitter systems, and in par- ticular brain circuits, were discussed in relation to behavior and to the effects of psychoactive drugs on behavior. The coverage was not exhaus- tive because of space limitations. The topics selected for review were, at the time, the focus of considerable experimental effort; they included homeostasis-motivated behaviors: sleep, locomotion, feeding, drinking, and sexual behavior. Brain dopamine systems were therefore discussed in depth, since they were already known to be centrally involved in motivated behaviors. Learning mechanisms and emotion were reviewed in the remaining chapters. In 1984 we initiated an update of behavioral pharmacology to review areas of progress within the same scope as the earlier volumes. This update continues in Volume 19. Among the contributions are several that represent important advances in analyzing behavior and the use of more sophisticated methods to define the effect of drugs on particular aspects of behavior. The chapters by Blundell on feeding and Miczek on aggres- sion illustrate the sophistication of modern ethopharmacology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52671269208337,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52671270125841,"sku":"NLS9781461290179","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781461290179.jpg?v=1762291918"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/fr-fr\/collections\/auteur-livres-de-leslie-iversen.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
