The images over an area whose woollen-related industries can be traced back to domestic sheep rearing on the green and wooded hillsides. The towns and townships of the Spen Valley reached a heyday in the first decades of the twentieth century. With photographs of mills, mines, railways, busy streets and special events, the contents of this volume are a valuable social comment on a relatively recent period of history. A Batley without them and the fine Market Place, a by-product of the mil era, is unthinkable. All of these were places influenced by industry, particularly East Ardsley with its iron works and railway depot. Most of the traditional industries, which are depicted here, have disappeared during the last half-century and much new, residential building has taken place. In addition, the many illustrations show the transport of years ago, the people of the area and the events that took place. Through its tribulations and successes, Morley has emerged as a town with a strong local identity.
