Sampson presents a contagion theory fit for the age of networks. Unlike memes and microbial contagions, Virality does not restrict itself to biological analogies and medical metaphors. It instead points toward a theory of contagious assemblages, events, and affects. For Sampson, contagion is not necessarily a positive or negative force of encounter; it is how society comes together and relates.  Sampson argues that a biological knowledge of contagion has been universally distributed by way of the rhetoric of fear used in the antivirus industry and other popular discourses surrounding network culture. This awareness is also detectable in concerns over too much connectivity, such as problems of global financial crisis and terrorism. Sampson’s “virality” is as established as that of the biological meme and microbe but is not understood through representational thinking expressed in metaphors and analogies. Rather, Sampson interprets contagion theory through the social relationalities first established in Gabriel Tarde’s microsociology and subsequently recognized in Gilles Deleuze’s ontological worldview.  According to Sampson, the reliance on representational thinking to explain the social behavior of networking—including that engaged in by nonhumans such as computers—allows language to overcategorize and limit analysis by imposing identities, oppositions, and resemblances on contagious phenomena. It is the power of these categories that impinges on social and cultural domains. Assemblage theory, on the other hand, is all about relationality and encounter, helping us to understand the viral as a positively sociological event, building from the molecular outward, long before it becomes biological.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50215421477137,"sku":"GOR010384712","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50369542750481,"sku":"CIN0816670056G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ VERY_GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":51509014626577,"sku":"CIN0816670056VG","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0816670056.jpg?v=1769079372"},{"product_id":"affect-and-social-media-book-tony-sampson-9781786604392","title":"Affect and Social Media","description":"This book offers a radical and timely cross-subject intervention into critical social media studies, comprised of four distinct but related sections which are interspersed with artistic illustrations, depicting the affectivities that flow through social media.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50391004283153,"sku":"CIN1786604396G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51735259775249,"sku":"GOR010065113","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52495605530897,"sku":"NIN9781786604392","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52585487532305,"sku":"NLS9781786604392","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1786604396.jpg?v=1759400899"},{"product_id":"for-god-s-sake-soteriology-the-road-to-redemption-book-tony-sampson-9780615218229","title":"For God's Sake Soteriology The Road To Redemption","description":null,"brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51119208497425,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51119211282705,"sku":"NIN9780615218229","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0615218229.jpg?v=1751294457"},{"product_id":"from-china-to-tibet-and-back-highlights-of-china-book-tony-sampson-9781432799366","title":"From China to Tibet and Back - Highlights of China","description":"China is an old culture. A proud culture as it should be. From this writers perspective, an exotic culture. Thus my adventure to China. I contacted China Highlights, a Chinese travel agency that I had found on the Internet at Chinahighlights.com. They had the itinerary I sought. Of course Beijing was on my list. I'd heard about the Terracotta Warriors in Xian. The sheer size of this excavation and what has been found is staggering and not to be missed. I had also recently heard about a modern engineering miracle, a train which protects the fragile high alpine environment as it hurtles at over a sixty miles an hour toward Tibet through the Himalayas. Tibet. The Himalayas. A high-speed train. All of these in one grand tour. Sounded great.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51191038771473,"sku":"NIN9781432799366","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1432799363.jpg?v=1750826221"},{"product_id":"it-s-about-time-book-tony-sampson-9781932672015","title":"It's About Time","description":"It's about Lust. It is comprised of four distinct but related sections which are interspersed with artistic illustrations, depicting the affectivities that flow through social media. The term 'affect' denotes a rather slippery concept that is not as easily caught as for example 'emotion' or 'feeling'. Quite often it denotes a more than or an excess to that which is felt in the human body or indexed through cultural grids of meaning. It can exist in ways which defy expectations, conventions, and representations. It is often understood as that which is vital to the emergence of the new and hence socio-cultural revolution. As life shifts ever more on-line, we find ourselves caught up in the affective flows of computer mediated practices into an ever expanding and indeterminate horizon. This compilation of articles that were initially presented at an international conference in East London, were selected on the basis of their ability to depict and conceptualise these radical movements of sociality.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52584939127057,"sku":"NLS9781786604385","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781786604385.jpg?v=1761051624"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/fr-fr\/collections\/auteur-livres-de-tony-sampson.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
