Focussing on the Political Warfare Executive (PWE), it tells the story of British efforts to undermine German morale and promote resistance against Nazi hegemony. Staffed by civil servants, journalists, academics and anti-fascist European exiles, PWE oversaw the BBC European Service alongside more than forty unique clandestine radio stations; they maintained a prolific outpouring of subversive leaflets and other printed propaganda; and they trained secret agents in psychological warfare. British policy during the occupation of Germany stemmed in part from the wartime insights and experiences of these propagandists.       Rather than analyse military strategy or tactics, British Subversive Propaganda during the Second World War draws on a wealth of archival material from collections in Germany and Britain to develop a critical genealogy of British ideas about Germany and National Socialism. British propagandists invoked discourses around history, morality, psychology, sexuality and religion in order to conceive of an audience susceptible to morale subversion. Revealing much about the contours of mid-century European thought and the origins of our own heavily propagandised world, this book provides unique insights for anyone researching British history, the Second World War, or the fight against fascism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51630682964241,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51630684897553,"sku":"NGR9783030716639","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52473249988881,"sku":"NLS9783030716639","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B0DVSNVW9T.jpg?v=1750870341"},{"product_id":"british-subversive-propaganda-during-the-second-world-war-book-kirk-robert-graham-9783030716660","title":"British Subversive Propaganda during the Second World War","description":"This book offers the first in-depth intellectual and cultural history of British subversive propaganda during the Second World War. They created a feminist travel gaze, intentionally or unintentionally, that differed from that of male peers. Unlike their brothers, who went for personal edification, women with means left their English homes for the great Italian cities of Florence, Naples, and Rome to escape personal disappointments and the social limitations imposed by parents, spouses, and society. The anonymity of travel to a distant land and new freedoms fostered political and creative achievements, including entrepreneurial journalism, literary masterpieces, and social advocacy for their gender, which redefined the contours of the Anglo-Italian cultural landscape. The historical evidence presented here testifies to the life-changing capacity of travel and firmly demonstrates how British women’s history and literature enriches and broadens narratives about Britain and the World.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51680312131857,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51680312394001,"sku":"NIN9783031617003","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52153443975441,"sku":"NGR9783031617003","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/3031617002.jpg?v=1750870597"},{"product_id":"britain-and-oman-c-19451980-book-tancred-bradshaw-9783031754715","title":"Britain and Oman, c. 1945–1980","description":"This book examines the relationship between Britain and Oman since the end of the Second World War up until the Iranian revolution. Particular focus is given to the political and economic development of the state, together with Britain’s various overt and covert interventions, principally in the three decades between 1945 and 1975. The author addresses themes which have previously been unexplored in the literature on Oman and British Imperialism in the Arabian Peninsula, such as the establishment of the Sultan’s Armed Forces, and the impact of the oil industry. The book shows that Sultan Said bin Taymur (r. 1932-1970) enjoyed considerable ‘agency’ in his relations with the British who found it very difficult to persuade him to implement economic development and establish relations with his neighbours. Britain’s relations with successive sultans were deliberately concealed, including the contribution of special forces in fighting Oman’s insurgencies.    It is widely argued that when Qaboos bin Said became Sultan in 1970, a ‘renaissance’ occurred, however many newly discovered documents have called this into question. They reveal how an inexperienced Sultan came to power with covert British support, and Whitehall’s direction of the war in Dhofar from afar. These documents highlight the extent of British intelligence cooperation and psychological warfare planning to counter the insurgents in Dhofar. However, as this book demonstrates, the Sultan also relied on non-British advisors, known as the ‘mafia’, to secure financial assistance and establish diplomatic ties across the Middle East. Finally, the book details how British defence assistance continued well beyond the retreat from empire in the Persian Gulf.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51741570793745,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51741571055889,"sku":"NIN9783031754715","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52591964684561,"sku":"NLS9783031754715","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031754715.jpg?v=1751462278"},{"product_id":"science-and-empire-book-b-bennett-9781349321902","title":"Science and Empire","description":"Offering one of the first analyses of how networks of science interacted within the British Empire during the past two centuries, this volume shows how the rise of formalized state networks of science in the mid nineteenth-century led to a constant tension between administrators and scientists.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52123872723217,"sku":"NLS9781349321902","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781349321902.jpg?v=1757453754"},{"product_id":"decolonisation-identity-and-nation-in-rhodesia-1964-1979-book-david-kenrick-9783030326975","title":"Decolonisation, Identity and Nation in Rhodesia, 1964-1979","description":"This book explores concepts of decolonisation, identity, and nation in the white settler society of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) between 1964 and 1979.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52124446228753,"sku":"NLS9783030326975","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53037305954577,"sku":"NIN9783030326975","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030326975.jpg?v=1757456752"},{"product_id":"hunting-africa-book-angela-thompsell-9781137494429","title":"Hunting Africa","description":"This book recovers the multiplicity of meanings embedded in colonial hunting and the power it symbolized by examining both the incorporation and representation of British women hunters in the sport and how African people leveraged British hunters' dependence on their labor and knowledge to direct the impact and experience of hunting.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52124883222801,"sku":"NLS9781137494429","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137494429.jpg?v=1757460043"},{"product_id":"british-burma-in-the-new-century-1895-1918-book-stephen-l-keck-9781137364326","title":"British Burma in the New Century, 1895-1918","description":"British Burma in the New Century draws upon neglected but talented colonial authors to portray Burma between 1895 and 1918, which was the apogee of British governance. Focusing on the period between the Suez Crisis of 1956 and the Falkland War but offering connections to the moment of Brexit, it argues that the “lost continent” of existential, satirical, simulated, and abstractly traumatic war stories is as central to understanding Britain’s martial history as the mainstream inheritance. The book features case studies that stress the contribution of exiled or expatriate directors and outsider sensibilities, with particular emphasis on Peter Watkins, Joseph Losey, and Richard Lester. At the same time, it demonstrates concerns and stylistic emphases that continue to the present in television series and films by directors such as Lone Scherfig and Christopher Nolan. Encompassing everything from features to government information films, the book explores related trends in the British film industry, popular culture, and film criticism, while offering a sense of how these contexts contribute to historical memory.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52134525468945,"sku":"NLS9783030302054","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030302054.jpg?v=1757542914"},{"product_id":"british-abroad-since-the-eighteenth-century-volume-2-book-m-farr-9781349454440","title":"The British Abroad Since the Eighteenth Century, Volume 2","description":"This is a collection of twelve interdisciplinary essays from international scholars concerned with examining the British experience of Empire since the eighteenth century. It explores the idea of Britain as a ‘Great Power’ since 1945 to show how the Coalition’s policies fitted into wider historical understandings of Britain’s role in the world. Drawing on a range of evidence from the time of the Coalition, it shows that this period was one of continued change in British foreign policy. The Coalition conducted the first strategic defence review since 1998, significantly reduced the funding allocations for defence and foreign affairs, raised overseas aid spending to record levels, engaged in overseas military action in two sovereign states (and were denied a chance to participate in another), as well as a wide array of other policies. This book argues that evaluating these events and the historical background of the Coalition is critical to understanding the current crises gripping British politics.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52142370226449,"sku":"NLS9783030809973","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030809973.jpg?v=1757579878"},{"product_id":"war-commemoration-and-civic-culture-in-the-north-east-of-england-18541914-book-guy-hinton-9783030785956","title":"War Commemoration and Civic Culture in the North East of England, 18541914","description":"This book examines a diverse set of civic war memorials in North East England commemorating three clusters of conflicts: the Crimean War and Indian Rebellion in the 1850s;","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144601989393,"sku":"NLS9783030785956","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030785956.jpg?v=1757589687"},{"product_id":"new-zealand-britain-and-european-integration-since-1960-book-hamish-mcdougall-9783031450167","title":"New Zealand, Britain, and European Integration Since 1960","description":"This book explores how New Zealand, a small country almost as far from Western Europe as it is possible to be, assumed political importance in Britain’s accession to the European Community vastly out of proportion to its size, proximity and strategic position. At several points in accession negotiations, the issue of New Zealand’s continued trade with Britain threatened to derail UK Government attempts to join the Community. This issue also interacted with the broader context of the Cold War, economic shocks and decolonisation, materially affecting the terms of entry into the European Community, and altering Britain’s relations with its European partners and the British public’s perceptions of British membership. After entry, New Zealand continued to resurface as a continued source of tension between Britain and an integrating Europe. The role that New Zealand played sheds light on Britain’s attempts to retain global influence after the demise of its formal empire. Contributing to a growing body of research which challenges the traditional historical narratives of British ‘decline’ and colonial ‘independence’ in the second half of the twentieth century, this book fills an important gap in the historiography of Britain following the 1973 enlargement of the European Communities.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52145709121809,"sku":"NLS9783031450167","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783031450167.jpg?v=1757594812"},{"product_id":"new-delhi-the-last-imperial-city-book-d-johnson-9781137469861","title":"New Delhi: The Last Imperial City","description":"Johnson provides an historically rich examination of the intersection of early twentieth-century imperial culture, imperial politics, and imperial economics as reflected in the colonial built environment at New Delhi, a remarkably ambitious imperial capital built by the British between 1911 and 1931.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52147879280913,"sku":"NLS9781137469861","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52746910236945,"sku":"NIN9781137469861","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137469861.jpg?v=1757601913"},{"product_id":"ramparts-of-empire-book-b-marsh-9781137374004","title":"Ramparts of Empire","description":"This cultural and political study examines British perceptions and policies on India's Afghan Frontier between 1918 and 1948 and the impact of these on the local Pashtun population, India as a whole, and the decline of British imperialism in South Asia.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52149815214353,"sku":"NLS9781137374004","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52746940186897,"sku":"NIN9781137374004","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137374004.jpg?v=1757608043"},{"product_id":"british-press-public-opinion-and-the-end-of-empire-in-africa-book-rosalind-coffey-9783030894559","title":"The British Press, Public Opinion and the End of Empire in Africa","description":"This book provides fresh insights into how the British press affected both British perceptions of decolonisation in Africa and British policy towards it during the wind of change period.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52151275913489,"sku":"NLS9783030894559","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030894559.jpg?v=1757612792"},{"product_id":"british-policy-in-the-persian-gulf-1961-1968-book-helene-von-bismarck-9781137326713","title":"British Policy in the Persian Gulf, 1961-1968","description":"An in-depth analysis of Great Britain's policy in the oil-rich Persian Gulf region during the last years of British imperialism in the area, covering the period from the independence of Kuwait to the decision of the Wilson Government to withdraw from the Gulf.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52330904912145,"sku":"NLS9781137326713","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52746952179985,"sku":"NIN9781137326713","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781137326713.jpg?v=1758146796"},{"product_id":"britain-and-danubian-europe-in-the-era-of-world-war-ii-1933-1941-book-andras-becker-9783030675097","title":"Britain and Danubian Europe in the Era of World War II, 1933-1941","description":"This book is a study of British official attitudes towards the Danubian countries (Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Yugoslavia) from Hitler's rise to power in 1933 to the year 1941, a period that marked serious but fruitless British political and economic efforts to unite this unruly part of Europe against Nazi ascendancy. Set against an international backdrop of regional revanchist, revisionist and irredentist tendencies, particularly in Hungary and Bulgaria, the book explores how these movements affected international relations in the region as they aimed to overturn the territorial order set down in Versailles following the Great War to restore the status quo of a more glorious national past. Offering fresh insights into the British-East Central and South East European relationship, the book charts the shifts in British official policy towards Danubian Europe, amidst competing regional nationalisms and the sudden and abrupt shifts in British global priorities during the early part of World War II.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52338599428369,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52338603229457,"sku":"NLS9783030675097","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030675097.jpg?v=1758168885"},{"product_id":"british-diplomacy-and-the-descent-into-chaos-book-j-fisher-9781349345885","title":"British Diplomacy and the Descent into Chaos","description":"Recreating the diplomatic career of Jack Garnett, from 1902-1919, John Fisher reveals a fascinating individual as well as contextualizing his story with regard to British policy in the countries to which he was posted in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, during a period of rapid change in international politics and in Britain's world role.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52342519726353,"sku":"NLS9781349345885","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52748238815505,"sku":"NIN9781349345885","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781349345885.jpg?v=1758172754"},{"product_id":"anglo-american-paper-war-book-j-eaton-9781349333363","title":"The Anglo-American Paper War","description":"The Paper War and the Development of Anglo-American Nationalisms, 1800-1825 offers fresh insight into the evolution of British and American nationalisms, the maturation of apologetics for slavery, and the early development of anti-Americanism, from approximately 1800 to 1830.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52343975575825,"sku":"NLS9781349333363","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52748268699921,"sku":"NIN9781349333363","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781349333363.jpg?v=1758174205"},{"product_id":"cinema-and-society-in-the-british-empire-1895-1940-book-james-burns-9781349455782","title":"Cinema and Society in the British Empire, 1895-1940","description":"By 1940 going to the movies was the most popular form of public leisure in Britain's empire. It offers insight into the social, political, diplomatic, and military issues that arose over the centuries of British involvement in the region, particularly focusing on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. British involvement can be separated into three phases: Discovery, Colonization and Decolonization, and Post-Empire. Decisions made by individual traders and high governmental officials are examined to understand how Great Britain impacted the Islamic world through these periods and, conversely, how events in the Islamic world influenced British decisions within the empire, in protection of the empire, and in the wake of the empire. The essays consider early perceptions of Islam, the role of trade, British-Ottoman relations, and colonial rule and control through religion. They explore British influence in a number of countries, including Somalia, Egypt, Palestine, Iran, Iraq, the Gulf States, India, and beyond. The final part of the book addresses the lasting impact of British imperial rule in the Islamic world.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52347196113169,"sku":"NLS9783030245085","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53037299761425,"sku":"NIN9783030245085","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030245085.jpg?v=1758177263"},{"product_id":"mackenzie-moment-and-imperial-history-book-stephanie-barczewski-9783030244583","title":"The MacKenzie Moment and Imperial History","description":"Written by seventeen historians from around the world, its subjects range from Jumbomania in Victorian Britain to popular imperial fiction, the East India Company, the ironic imperial revivalism of the 1960s, Scotland and Ireland and the empire, to transnational Chartism and Belgian colonialism.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52352308150545,"sku":"NLS9783030244583","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53037299859729,"sku":"NIN9783030244583","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030244583.jpg?v=1758181783"},{"product_id":"britain-and-danubian-europe-in-the-era-of-world-war-ii-1933-1941-book-andras-becker-9783030675127","title":"Britain and Danubian Europe in the Era of World War II, 1933-1941","description":"This book is a study of British official attitudes towards the Danubian countries (Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Romania and Yugoslavia) from Hitler's rise to power in 1933 to the year 1941, a period that marked serious but fruitless British political and economic efforts to unite this unruly part of Europe against Nazi ascendancy. Set against an international backdrop of regional revanchist, revisionist and irredentist tendencies, particularly in Hungary and Bulgaria, the book explores how these movements affected international relations in the region as they aimed to overturn the territorial order set down in Versailles following the Great War to restore the status quo of a more glorious national past. Offering fresh insights into the British-East Central and South East European relationship, the book charts the shifts in British official policy towards Danubian Europe, amidst competing regional nationalisms and the sudden and abrupt shifts in British global priorities during the early part of World War II.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52403555205393,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52403555860753,"sku":"NLS9783030675127","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030675127.jpg?v=1758761343"},{"product_id":"tudor-empire-book-jessica-s-hower-9783030628949","title":"Tudor Empire","description":"Unearthing over a century of theorizing about and probing into the world beyond England's borders, Tudor Empire shows that foreign enterprise at once mirrored, responded to, and provoked domestic politics and culture, while decisively shaping the Atlantic World.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52404526842129,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52404527759633,"sku":"NLS9783030628949","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030628949.jpg?v=1758764438"},{"product_id":"decolonisation-identity-and-nation-in-rhodesia-1964-1979-book-david-kenrick-9783030327002","title":"Decolonisation, Identity and Nation in Rhodesia, 1964-1979","description":"This book explores concepts of decolonisation, identity, and nation in the white settler society of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) between 1964 and 1979.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52405783200017,"sku":"NLS9783030327002","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9783030327002.jpg?v=1758767993"},{"product_id":"british-cultural-diplomacy-in-south-africa-19601994-book-daniel-j-feather-9783031494406","title":"British Cultural Diplomacy in South Africa, 1960–1994","description":"This book analyses the British government’s use of cultural diplomacy in South Africa from 1960 to 1994. Previously, scholarship on UK-South African relations has focussed mainly on political, economic, or military links; this book makes an important and original intervention by emphasising how the British government sought to use cultural ties as part of its diplomacy in South Africa. The book also highlights the controversy these links generated owing to broader international efforts to ostracise South Africa owing to the racist apartheid system in the country at the time. By examining British policy towards educational exchanges, performing arts tours, radio and television broadcasts, and sporting contact, this book provides a dynamic case study from which to analyse Britain’s use of cultural diplomacy during a period of relative decline, while also adding a new layer to the well-established literature on the UK-South African special relationship.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52418521235729,"sku":"NGR9783031494406","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"new-zealand-britain-and-european-integration-since-1960-book-hamish-mcdougall-9783031450198","title":"New Zealand, Britain, and European Integration Since 1960","description":"This book explores how New Zealand, a small country almost as far from Western Europe as it is possible to be, assumed political importance in Britain’s accession to the European Community vastly out of proportion to its size, proximity and strategic position. At several points in accession negotiations, the issue of New Zealand’s continued trade with Britain threatened to derail UK Government attempts to join the Community. This issue also interacted with the broader context of the Cold War, economic shocks and decolonisation, materially affecting the terms of entry into the European Community, and altering Britain’s relations with its European partners and the British public’s perceptions of British membership. After entry, New Zealand continued to resurface as a continued source of tension between Britain and an integrating Europe. The role that New Zealand played sheds light on Britain’s attempts to retain global influence after the demise of its formal empire. Contributing to a growing body of research which challenges the traditional historical narratives of British ‘decline’ and colonial ‘independence’ in the second half of the twentieth century, this book fills an important gap in the historiography of Britain following the 1973 enlargement of the European Communities.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":52418528575761,"sku":"NGR9783031450198","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}]},{"product_id":"british-diplomacy-and-the-descent-into-chaos-book-j-fisher-9780230348974","title":"British Diplomacy and the Descent into Chaos","description":"Recreating the diplomatic career of Jack Garnett, from 1902-1919, John Fisher reveals a fascinating individual as well as contextualizing his story with regard to British policy in the countries to which he was posted in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, during a period of rapid change in international politics and in Britain's world role.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52428772966673,"sku":"NLS9780230348974","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52734692753681,"sku":"NIN9780230348974","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9780230348974.jpg?v=1759165139"},{"product_id":"ramparts-of-empire-book-b-marsh-9781349476787","title":"Ramparts of Empire","description":"This cultural and political study examines British perceptions and policies on India's Afghan Frontier between 1918 and 1948 and the impact of these on the local Pashtun population, India as a whole, and the decline of British imperialism in South Asia.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52433628430609,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52433628954897,"sku":"NLS9781349476787","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781349476787.jpg?v=1759178578"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/fr-fr\/collections\/britain-and-the-world-series-de-livres.oembed","provider":"World of Books ","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
