Is it the capacity to persuade? Or is it 'mere' rhetoric: the ability to get others to do what the speaker wants, regardless of what they want? This is the rhetoric of ideological manipulation and political seduction. Rhetoric is for some a distinctive mode of communication; for others, whenever someone speaks, rhetoric is present. This book is devoted to helping readers understand these rival accounts, by showing how it has happened that there are so many conceptions of rhetoric. Any such approach must be rooted in classical antiquity, since our ideas of rhetoric are the product of a complicated historical process starting in ancient Greece. Greek rhetoric was born in bitter controversy. The figure of Gorgias is at the centre of that debate and of this book: he invites us to confront the terrifying, exhilarating possibility that persuasion is just power.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ GOOD \/ SBYB","offer_id":50350497136913,"sku":"CIN0415146437G","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50709469036817,"sku":"GOR005987127","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52144649568529,"sku":"NLS9780415146432","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53108429717777,"sku":"NIN9780415146432","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0415146437.jpg?v=1751229610"},{"product_id":"investigating-the-relationship-between-aristotles-eudemian-and-nicomachean-ethic-book-giulio-di-basilio-9781032271682","title":"Investigating the Relationship Between Aristotles Eudemian and Nicomachean Ethics","description":"Focusing on the relationship between the Eudemian and the Nicomachean Ethics, this collection of essays studies major themes from and new perspectives on Aristotles ethics. The book examines ancient meteorology, an aspect of ancient thought largely neglected by scholars. Hall produces a detailed account of how Posidonius and other ancient thinkers approached and attempted to explain meteorological phenomena – phenomena familiar to everyone, which could not be ignored in attempts to understand the natural world, but were difficult to explain satisfactorily and convincingly despite the efforts of important ancient thinkers. The volume explores particular classes of phenomena, including climatic events and geological processes, providing a comprehensive overview of Posidonius’ ideas on these topics. Concluding chapters allow for an assessment of Posidonius’ particular contribution to the field and his influence on later writers working on this subject. The Meteorology of Posidonius provides an important resource for students and scholars working on ancient philosophy and ancient science, particularly ancient meteorology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51001398100241,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51001400557841,"sku":"NIN9780367023720","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52520760312081,"sku":"NLS9780367023720","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0367023725.jpg?v=1750909936"},{"product_id":"investigating-the-relationship-between-aristotles-eudemian-and-nicomachean-ethic-book-giulio-di-basilio-9780367344986","title":"Investigating the Relationship Between Aristotles Eudemian and Nicomachean Ethics","description":"Focusing on the relationship between the Eudemian and the Nicomachean Ethics, this collection of essays studies major themes from and new perspectives on Aristotles ethics. Mason seeks both to shed light on the key issue of flux in Plato’s work, and to show that there is also in Plato a notion of flow that needs to be distinguished from flux. Mason brings out the importance of this hitherto neglected distinction, and proposes on its basis a new way of understanding the development of Plato’s thought. The opposition between the ‘being’ of Forms and the ‘becoming’ or ‘flux’ of sensibles has been fundamental to the understanding of Plato from Aristotle to the present day. One key concern of this volume is to clarify which kinds or levels of flux Plato accepts in sensibles. In addition, Mason argues that this traditional approach is unsatisfactory, as it leaves out the important notion of flow. Unlike flux, flow is a kind of motion that does not entail intrinsic change. It is also not restricted to the sensible, but covers motions of soul as well, including the circular motion of nous (intelligence) that is crucial in Plato’s later thought, particularly his cosmology. In short, flow is not incompatible with ‘being’, and in this study Plato’s development is presented, largely, as his arrival at this view, in correction of his earlier conflation of flux and flow in establishing the dichotomy between being and becoming. Mason’s study offers fresh insights into many dialogues and difficult passages in Plato’s oeuvre, and situates Plato’s conception and usage of ‘flow’ and ‘flux’ in relation to earlier usage in the Greek poetic tradition and the Presocratic thinkers, particularly Heraclitus. The first study of its kind, Flow and Flux uncovers dimensions of Plato’s thinking that may reshape the way his philosophy is understood.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51170234827025,"sku":"NIN9781138918184","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52475703329041,"sku":"NLS9781138918184","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1138918180.jpg?v=1751080399"},{"product_id":"forms-souls-and-embryos-book-james-wilberding-9781138955271","title":"Forms, Souls, and Embryos","description":"Forms, Souls, and Embryos allows readers coming from different backgrounds to appreciate the depth and originality with which the Neoplatonists engaged with and responded to a number of philosophical questions central to human reproduction, including: What is the causal explanation of the embryo’s formation? The book develops a new methodology for understanding the evidence concerning authors of the Early Academy, Speusippus in particular, providing a fresh assessment of the initial phase of Platonism, which calls into question the long-held view that Speusippus was a distinct outlier among Platonists. By reconstructing discussions within the Academy, looking at Aristotle especially, we can better understand the presence of Speusippus’ doctrinal deviation from or preservation of Plato’s doctrine as the effort of a genuine Platonist – the first – to re-shape his Platonic credentials in the backdrop of Aristotle’s critiques. In offering a new reconstruction of the philosophical views of Speusippus, the book provides new points of departure for research on the Early Academy and challenges previous ideas regarding the early development of Platonism. Speusippus: A Forgotten Voice of Platonism is of interest to students and scholars of Speusippus, as well as those working on Platonism, the Academy, and ancient philosophy more broadly.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51597428326673,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":51597428457745,"sku":"NIN9781032874180","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51597428621585,"sku":"NGR9781032874180","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52660028899601,"sku":"NLS9781032874180","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/103287418X.jpg?v=1751334013"},{"product_id":"aristotle-on-the-continuum-in-presocratic-thought-book-giovanna-r-giardina-9781032834238","title":"Aristotle on the Continuum in Presocratic Thought","description":"This book offers the first comprehensive analysis of the origin and development of the concept of physical continuity in ancient thought before Aristotle, combining a thorough study of Presocratic philosophy with Aristotle’s perspective. The concept of continuity plays a fundamental role in Aristotle's philosophy, particularly in his physics; however, nowhere in his corpus does he present his theory of continuity. In this book, readers gain a solid foundation for understanding Aristotle’s theory of the continuum through an in-depth exploration of Presocratic views on being and continuity. The book’s innovative approach critically analyzes Aristotle’s engagement with his predecessors, including the work of Anaximander, the Pythagoreans, Eleatic philosophy, and the Atomists. By addressing this gap in existing literature, this volume not only enriches the discourse on Presocratic thought, but also establishes a clearer understanding of Aristotle’s contributions to the concept of continuity. This book is suitable for students and scholars of ancient philosophy and the philosophy of science, particularly those working on Presocratic philosophy and Aristotle’s thought more broadly.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51600032203025,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ GARDNERS","offer_id":51600032301329,"sku":"NGR9781032834238","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52676112482577,"sku":"NLS9781032834238","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/1032834234.jpg?v=1750887313"},{"product_id":"taurus-of-beirut-book-federico-m-petrucci-9781138186743","title":"Taurus of Beirut","description":"This volume is the first monograph devoted to the philosophy of Taurus of Beirut, and provides a long-awaited analysis of his texts and their first English translation. Collected here for the first time are sixteen of his most important essays on Ancient Logic, Language, and Metaphysics. These essays show a perceptive historian and a skillful logician philosophically engaged with issues that are still at the very heart of history and philosophy of logic, such as the nature of predication, identity, and modality. As well as essays found in disparate publications, often not easily available online, the volume includes an article on Plato and the relatives translated into English for the first time and an unpublished paper on De interpretatione 7. Mignucci thinks rigorously and writes clearly. He brings the deep knowledge of a scholar and the precision of a logician to bear on some of the trickiest topics in ancient philosophy. The Meteorology of Posidonius provides an important resource for students and scholars working on ancient philosophy and ancient science, particularly ancient meteorology.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52596778893585,"sku":"NLS9781032530307","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"US \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":53333764735249,"sku":"NIN9781032530307","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781032530307.jpg?v=1761073177"},{"product_id":"birth-of-rhetoric-book-robert-wardy-9781138151116","title":"The Birth of Rhetoric","description":"What is rhetoric? The figure of Gorgias is at the centre of that debate and of this book: he invites us to confront the terrifying, exhilarating possibility that persuasion is just power.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52664320131345,"sku":null,"price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ NEW \/ INGRAM","offer_id":52664321081617,"sku":"NLS9781138151116","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/9781138151116.jpg?v=1762274317"},{"product_id":"epicurus-on-the-self-book-attila-nmeth-9781138633858","title":"Epicurus on the Self","description":"Epicurus on the Self reconstructs a part of Epicurean ethics which only survives on the fragmentary papyrus rolls excavated from an ancient library in Herculaneum, On Nature XXV.
