The selections have been made by the distinguished poet, critic and biographer Ian Hamilton. Wilfred Owen was born in 1893, the son of a Shropshire railway-worker. He enlisted for army service in 1915, was commissioned and sent to the front. At first conventionally patriotic, he was soon reporting home on the \"most execrable sights on earth\". Wounded on the Somme he was invalided to Craiglockheart Hospital near Edinburgh, where he met Siegfried Sassoon. Sassoon vigorously criticized his early work (Owen had been writing verse since childhood) and encouraged him in the belief that poets should tell the truth about the conduct of the war. In 1918, Owen returned to France, and won the Military Cross for bravery. But Brooke did not die in battle (he was in truth felled by a mosquito bite) but this detail was not allowed to obstruct the launching of his legend. The selections have been made by the distinguished poet, critic and biographer Ian Hamilton. Although now famed cheifly as a playwright, Oscar Wilde started his career as a poet, winning the Newdigate Prize at Oxford in 1878. A disciple of Walter Pater his determinedly \"aesthetic\" affectations found their first literary expression in a book called \"Poems\" (1881). It was as a coming poet that he toured the United States in 1882. After his marriage two years later, Wilde for several years wrote prose, including one novel, \"The Picture of Dorian Gray\", and it was not until the early 1890s that he began scoring his theatrical successes. Then came his friendship with Lord Alfred Douglas, and his imprisonment in 1895 for \"homosexual offences\". Bankrupted and disgraced, Wilde on his release exiled himself in France and there wrote \"The Ballad of Reading Jail\", now generally recognised as his sole poetic master-work. He is admired as the author of a handful of haunting anthology pieces, such as \"The Ancient Mariner\" and \"Kubla Khan\", - but the bulk of his verse writings is ignored. \"An archangel slightly damaged\", was Charles Lamb's memorable summing up, implying a sort of brilliant unfulfilment, and this is how we tend to see the poems. But Coleridge was a most industrious archangel. His collected \"Poetical Works\", runs to two substantial volumes. This selection includes all his classic poems but also tries to represent the whole range of his achievement.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49666174779665,"sku":"GOR003980008","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50720384647441,"sku":"GOR002592323","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0747514895.jpg?v=1750784849"},{"product_id":"alexander-pope-selected-poems-book-alexander-pope-9780747518624","title":"Alexander Pope: Selected Poems","description":"A selection of poems by Alexander Pope. The selections have been made by the distinguished poet, critic and biographer Ian Hamilton. Alfred Tennyson was born in 1809 and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge where he formed a close friendship with the poet and critic Arthur Hallam. It was Hallam's early death in 1833 that inspired Tennyson's great sequence of elegies \"In Memoriam\", published in 1850. In the same year he married Emily Sellwood and was appointed Poet Laureate. From the age of 41 until his death in 1892 Tennyson was thought of as the official bard of Victorian England, and enjoyed a status and popularity that few poets have enjoyed, before or since. In the early 20th century his reputation dwindled, but in recent years there has been a willingness to look beyond the official, jingoistic laureate to discover the Tennyson whom T.S. Eliot called the saddest of all English poets.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":49727796248849,"sku":"GOR006511379","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50478215102737,"sku":"GOR008664902","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0747518653.jpg?v=1751232635"},{"product_id":"algernon-charles-swinburne-book-algernon-charles-swinburne-9780747546917","title":"Algernon Charles Swinburne","description":"Swinburne was born in 1836 and educated at Balliol, Oxford. Pursued by bailiffs and multiple recriminations his father disowned him; his first wife committed suicide. The selections have been made by the distinguished poet, critic and biographer Ian Hamilton. William Wordsworth was born in 1770. In 1798, with Coleridge, he published \"Lyrical Ballads\" and that work's famous preface is now taken as a key Romantic manifesto. In it Wordsworth argues for everyday subjects and an unornamented diction. Shortly after, in poems like \"Resolution and Independence\" and \"Intimations of Immortality\", a childlike responsiveness to Nature's moral teachings is proposed as an ideal. Most of the poems of Wordsworth's great middle period are set in the Lake District, where he lived most of his adult life. In his youth, Wordsworth was a vehement republican (his ideas formed by early contact with the French Revolution) but with fame and middle-age he drifted gradually into the conservatism and self-parody that were much ridiculed in his later years. He died in 1850.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":50793351479569,"sku":"GOR002652019","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/0747518661.jpg?v=1750744869"},{"product_id":"elegies-book-ian-hamilton-9780747537304","title":"Elegies","description":"This is a collection of elegies, or songs of loss. The selections have been made by the distinguished poet, critic and biographer Ian Hamilton. Andrew Marvell was born in Yorkshire in 1621, and came to maturity during the Civil War. It is thought that his first sympathies were royalist, but that, with Cromwell's accession, his views changed. His famous \"Horatian Ode\" exhibits a deep equivocation which persisted throughout his subsequent political career. He served prominently as a civil servant under Cromwell and later as Member of Parliament for Hull, a post which he held throughout the Restoration until his death in 1678 - a death not perhaps accidental. Marvell's poems were not published until after his death and even then went largely neglected until this century. Modern critics have responded enthusiastically to Marvell as a man of mystery.","brand":"WoB","offers":[{"title":"- \/ - \/ -","offer_id":51296261079313,"sku":"","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ VERY_GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":51296261636369,"sku":"GOR003588296","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false},{"title":"GB \/ GOOD \/ INTERNAL","offer_id":52696520491281,"sku":"GOR005162414","price":0.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0784\/4072\/6801\/files\/B0092GEHZ2.jpg?v=1751441272"},{"product_id":"selected-poems-of-william-blake-book-william-blake-9780747517672","title":"Selected Poems of William Blake","description":"\"Bloomsbury Poetry Classics\" are selections from the work of some of our greatest poets.
