Against the Current by Luke Young
Against the Current is a true story about a member of the first generation of teenagers to be confronted with the lightning speed advances of an online world that continue to challenge their pursuit of a happier and healthier life. It is a memoir that moves from gross misuse to having all devices locked away, and a struggle to even carry a mobile phone that transforms an otherwise ordinary life into a battle for survival in the modern world. But it is this experience that makes them discover that the need for a balance between staying connected and maintaining a decent level of personal care, is not so peculiar after all.
Dr Tim Rank, MBBS, MRC Psych, Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry at Grove Park Hospital: It has become increasingly obvious that excessive use of social media can be extremely damaging to young people's mental healthThis story serves as a cautionary tale both for young people and their parents .
Luke Young is a young author whose first book, Against the Current, aims to respond to a recent mental health crisis associated with online life. Due to his use of social media as a developing child, he now minimises his engagement with online activity as much as possible so that he can best protect his own mental health, although he avidly enjoys being with people, as an individual taking a keen interest in different individuals' engagement with the virtual world, both large and small. He has a master's degree in Intellectual History at the University of Sussex and lives in Brighton, UK.
