Portraits, performance shots and ephemera such as sheet music and record sleeves illustrate the text.

Robert Santelli is deputy director of the Experience Music Project in Seattle. Holly George-Warren is an editor at Rolling Stone Press. Jim Brown is an Emmy-award winning director who produced the American Roots Music documentary for PBS.
