Gary Althen has been a foreign student adviser at the University of Iowa for many years and has lived and worked abroad in Peru and Malaysia. He is the author of Handbook of Foreign Student Advising, the only comprehensive guide to the profession and in 1993 was the first recipient of the annual Marita Houlihan Award, given by the Association of International Educators for outstanding achievement in foreign student affairs.
