Dan Gallagher moved to the Florida Keys in 1988 after seventeen years as a college professor to work as a professional boat captain, environmental tour, editor, and writer. His main interest became the history of the Keys, notably the Florida East Coast Railway, which he documented in his book Florida's Great Ocean Railway: Constructing the Key West Extension. Pigeon Key and the Seven-Mile Bridge, Marathon: Heart of the Key West Expansion, and numerous chapters of Florida Keys Environmental Story, for which he served as editor-in-chief, are among his other works.
