The Art of English by Sharon Goodman
This volume provides a critical examination of texts which can be considered 'literary'. What distinguishes some texts as 'art'? How do we recognize literary creativity? To answer questions such as these, the book ranges across creative texts produced for public consumption: from poetry, drama and fiction to performance art and online literature. It provides a lively and accessible introduction to stylistic, semiotic and multimodal analysis drawing on work in Literature and Media Studies, Performance Studies, Linguistics, and Anthropology.
SHARON GOODMAN and KIERAN O'HALLORAN work in the Centre for Language and Communications at the Open University, UK, where they are responsible for the design and production of a range of open learning materials on aspects of English studies. Sharon Goodman's publications include Redesigning English: New Texts, New Identities (Routledge, 1996) and Teaching Academic Writing: A Toolkit for Higher Education (Routledge, 2003). Kieran O'Halloran is author of Critical Discourse Analysis and Language Cognition (Edinburgh University Press, 2003).
