It also explores the social and historical background that gave rise to those inventions. Its grasp of both science and civilization shows man's ability to understand nature, to control it and not be controlled by it.
Jacob Bronowski was born in Poland in 1908. Subsequently, his family settled in Britain and he was educated at Cambridge University where he became a Fellow of Jesus College. Dr Bronowski moved to the United States in 1964 on taking up a senior post at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, California. He died in 1974.
