The Beginner's Guide to Sanity by Erica Crompton

Psychosis is possibly the most feared symptom of mental health disorders, other than suicide, as the sufferer loses touch with reality and can be an extreme danger to themselves and occasionally others. It is particularly associated with schizophrenia, but also manic episodes of bipolar disorder, extreme stress and emotional trauma and substance abuse. Erica Crampton, a former psychosis/schizophrenia patient and now mental health activist and writer, and Stephen Lawrie, Professor of Psychiatry in Edinburgh, UK, have come together to write this practical and positive guide to the tools for recovery to help people with psychosis, or at risk of developing psychosis, and their family and friends, lead a happier, more rewarding life. Written in the style of a travel guide, with lifestyle and wellbeing advice to improve outcomes as well as guidance on conventional treatments, each approach is given a `sanity check' regarding its reliability.
Erica Crompton has a degree in journalism and has written about mental health for The Mail on Sunday, The Guardian, The Independent, Metro Online, The Lancet Psychiatry & Disability Now. In addition she gives keynote speeches across the UK on living with psychosis and schizophrenia which includes talks for schools. She has a history of paranoid schizophrenia, but today is schizo-affective, stable and working part-time. Professor Stephen Lawrie is Head of Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh, UK, and an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) and the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology. During 2014, he is a Beltane Fellow for Public Engagement in Science. Stephen is Director of the Scottish Mental Health Research Network and Director of the Medical Research Foundation- and Medical Research Council-funded UK Clinical Research Training Fellowship programme for Mental Health (PsySTAR). As a practising clinician and clinically oriented researcher, Stephen is interested in clinical applications of brain imaging in psychosis, with a view towards objective diagnostic aids in psychosis and psychiatry, and in the development of novel treatments that might enhance outcomes in patients with established psychoses and possibly even prevent the onset of psychosis in high risk populations.
