Belize by Carlos Ledson Miller

Ramon Kelley is the ambitious manager of the last company to log mahogany in the Belizean rain forest. The story opens on the eve of Hurrican Hatti, then transports the reader across 40 years, from the unrest of colonial British Honduras to the turnbulence of modern Belize. The personal odysseys of Ramon Kelley, Ray Kelley, and Clive Lightburn take them from the teeming streets of Belize City to the impenetrable rain forest, from the far western mountains to the pristine Caribbean cayes. Set on a harsh, exciting landscape, BELIZE is the action-filled saga of a family and a nation searching for their identities.
Carlos Ledson Miller is the author of the novels: PANAMA and BELIZE. Carlos grew up in both the United States and in Central America. His grandfather was one of the Americans who went to Panama in the early 1900s to dig the canal. Carlos' grandmother was Panamanian, and his father was a first-generation Canal Zonian. Carlos initially attended school in Panama. When he reached his teens, his father relocated to Belize (then called British Honduras) and his mother returned home to the United States. Carlos attended high school and college in Louisiana and spent his summers in Belize. After a four-year tour in the Marine Corps, Carlos settled on the Texas Gulf Coast, where he now lives and writes.
