Chateau d'Argol by Julien Gracq
This novel focuses on a lonely gothic castle and the characters who inhabit it, one of whom is the rich young man who has recently acquired the chateau. When he invites a friend to stay with him, he arrives in the company of a beautiful woman whose detached amorality disturbs both men.
Chateau d'Argol combines powerful psychological drama with a romantic philosophical disquisition, which is by turns elegiac, gothic and shocking * House and Garden *
Julien Gracq (1910-2007) taught history and geography in various lycées. Although close to André Breton, he never belonged to the Surrealist movement as is sometimes thought. His work, inspired by German Romanticism, combines startling imagery with a rich, precise metre. Staunchly avoiding the French literary scene—he refused the Prix Goncourt in 1951—he is one of the few authors to be published in the Pleiade during his lifetime. He died in 2007 aged 97.
