Clarence Thomas by David Collins
The little boy Clarence Thomas grew up in segregated Savannah, Georgia. He learned hard work from his grandfather, who delivered ice door to door, seven days a week. He learned the value of faith and the power of education from the nuns at St. Benedict's School.
Though other students called him names, he never fought back with his hands. When people criticized his work for the Department of Education, his carefully measured words helped them understand that his actions were based in fairness to all people, regardless of the color of their skin. When words spoken in anger threatened to get in the way of his appointment to the Supreme Court, his considered words led others to understand his value to the nation.
The late David R. Collins published over sixty books for young readers during his lifetime. He was an admired and respected educator. This is his last book.
Illustrator Rosalie M. Shepherd is a well-known landscape and portrait painter, employing oils, acrylics, charcoal, and watercolors. Her work has been featured in the Peabody Language Development kit, used internationally by educators to teach language skills. She has worked extensively as a graphic designer and is also the illustrator of The Tuskegee Airmen Story, Tuskegee Airmen: American Heroes, and Girls Fly!, all published by Pelican.
