The Complete Guide to Surfing by Peter Dixon

With its comprehensive text and brilliant full-colour photos, "The Complete Guide to Surfing" clearly and vividly explains the world of surfing. Here is everything you need to paddle out and join in. Veteran surfing writer and California surfing pioneer Peter Dixon takes the reader step by step through basics such as choosing the right board, reading waves, paddling out, and from making your first ride through intermediate and advanced techniques. You'll learn the subtleties of board design, etiquette on the waves, safety manoeuvres, how to deal with the inevitable wipeout and other hazards, moves to add power and grace to your rides, and tips on dealing with - and maybe riding - the really big waves. Here also is detailed expert advice on body-surfing and bodyboarding, and stories of surfing adventures in exotic locations around the world. "The Complete Guide to Surfing" also provides a loving portrait of the sport, from its humble beginnings to its resurgence at the beginning of the last century to the world's stage today.
Born in New York City, Peter Dixon was a bi-coastal kid as his father, a writer, and his actor mother shuttled between New York and Los Angeles. His love for the ocean is a natural result of beginning to surf when he was in high school, lifeguarding on Los Angeles beaches through graduate school, and beach life in Malibu, California, with his wife, Sarah, and their three children. Finding a career as a human factors scientist in a Santa Monica, California, think tank not to his taste, he turned to writing. The Complete Book of Surfing was the first widely read book on that wet and wild sport. He wrote the first Flipper television script, and several others for the series, followed by dozens of prime time teleplays while turning out twenty-nine published books. His recent novel Hunting the Dragon reflects his deep involvement with the sea and marine conservation. Attention, Les Enfants Regardent, The Children Are Watching, written with Laird Koenig, was translated into seven languages, and was awarded best thriller of the year in France. Alain Delon produced and starred in the motion picture. C@UGHT IN THE WEB brings to life Dixon's concern that TV and the Internet, while offering much of value, are also often a destructive force in the lives of children. He asks, if parents fail to open a child's life to the wider world of nature how will they learn to care for our earth and have compassion for one another?
