The Pleistocene era (starting about 2. 5 million years ago) made the earth what it is today, saw the origins of most of the big animals that now walk on it - including ourselves. It was the heyday of the mammals. Colin Tudge has been twice shortlisted for the Science Book Prize, and is one of Britain's finest science writers. A zoologist educated at Cambridge, he is a former features editor of New Scientist and a member of the council of the London Zoological Society.
