The need for an evidence base for nursing practice is widely accepted. However, what evidence is and how nurses might appraise and apply it to their practice is still a matter of some debate, which can leave the novice nurse feeling confused. Peter Ellis is Senior Lecturer in Adult Nursing at Canterbury Christ Church University where he teaches leadership and management, research and other subjects at pre-registration, post-registration and post-graduate level. Prior to joining Canterbury, Peter was Senior Nurse - Renal Outpatient's and Research Projects Manager at King's College Hospital, London.
