At this time he wrote many of his greatest works, and was the champion of his contemporaries Berlioz and Wagner. His private life during these years was dominated by Princess Carolyne von Sayn-Wittgenstein. Alan Walker uses both contemporary sources and previously unpublished letters. Walker was awarded the Commemorative Plaque of the Budapest Liszt Society in 1980.
